How easy/hard would this conversion be?

I have a 87' 2f, tranny, t-case with 130K on it that i would like to drop in my Fj40. How many banana job is this and what all would i need to do to accomplish this? My rings are pretty worn and my 40 is starting to smoke more and more each day and before she craps on me i would like to get the 87' setup all tuned and cleaned before i install it.

thanks guys.

Due to the year stated, are these donor parts from a 60-series?

The 2F should be easy the rest not so. The shifter on the FJ60 transmission will be further back than in a FJ40. The transmission is a lot longer in the post 84s. It is the same size as the five speed. The split transfer case is longer too. Doubt it would fit with the stock gas tank in place if your taking about a 80 fj40.

When I say easy for the 2F that using the bell housing off your earlier 2F with the threaded holes for the motor mounts.

Would you suggest removing the tranny/tcase and bellhousing from the 2f in my 40 now and install that on to the 2f from the 87?

yes, this also keeps the parking brake on back of TC without having to buy that expensive deal for the split case.

2 bananas would be to have the existing head checked out at the machine shop, new valve job and put it back on.
The 5 speed with split case wil be longer and require some surgery to the 40, namely the crossmember will need to be cut and flipped. I'm not too sure about the shifter location being moved too close to the tank as I've never fooled with a 79' and up. I would consider that 5speed if you can hack the work. Use the engine with the best compression and cylinders. Stay away from the later 2F carb setup maybe and use the 1980 set up. JimC would know best here. Good luck, if you do this conversion be sure to post up your progress so we can watch and learn.

It will fit but it will be very close. You will have to change the lengths of the drive shafts. And it would have to locate a top plate for the tranny to fit a 40. I would not go this route. Seperate the bellhousing/tranny from the 2f and install the new 2f to your existing set up.
