How does one shut off KDSS? (2 Viewers)

Looking to be able to switch off KDSS at any speed.

Since KDSS is a hydraulic system, AFAIK there is no way to switch it on or off.

Of course, if one were to open both KDSS shutter valves there would be no action on the part of the system - but the vehicle would be dangerous to drive in that condition.

Or am I missing something?

You can't. It's not possible given how the system works/functions. Some people remove it and accept decreased stability, while others retrofit sway bars..

In the early generation KDSS systems like that in the 200-series, there are no provisions to shut it off. It's a purely mechanical system.

Major mechanical responses independent of speed
  • It stiffest in flat cornering.
  • It has accumulators to allow some degree of freedom over mild articulation.
  • On large cross articulation, also known as warp, mechanical valves open up to "shut off" the system.

Newer model year Toyota's (but not the 200-series) added some electronics where there were breakpoints and logic for it to tailor the response of KDSS

What causes the mechanical valves to open on cross articulation?

Has anyone driven their 200 with the KDSS 5mm screws loose?

Is it not true it shuts off in low range and under 12mph?

It is not true that KDSS shuts off in low range and under 12mph.

There are no electronics associated with the KDSS system. The only parameters that drive the operation of the system are differential hydraulic pressures at each wheel.

Probably when the internal valves see a specific combination of pressures.

I've always wondered if the bleed screws could be run in the open position. Probably not?

Maybe could remove the end links and tie the bar out of the way?

Prado 150 and 5th Gen 4Runner have an electronic interface for KDSS and can be deactivated. DR KDSS sells the harness and switch for it.

Since the OP is posting in the 200-Series forum, I assume he is asking about the KDSS system in his 2013 LC200 - which does not have E-KDSS.

There technically was an electronic provision in early build 200s but it isn’t for any level of control, just a pressure transducer to relay internal system pressure to the vehicle electronics. Even that sensor was eliminated in 2010 or 2011 IIRC.

@LandCruiserPhil you’d probably be interested in the thread I put together when I cut open one of these valves to understand the function.

Source?

There was no valve that would accomplish that function when I did the above investigation. The bars allowing warp was purely a function of pressures being applied to different parts of the rams when compared to flat cornering.

Running with the screws open would effectively be like removing the sway bars completely. The front and rear kdss arms wouldn’t be able to act as stationary pivots to resist bar movement as they do with the valves closed.

You could disconnect the sway bars from the pistons. Similar to sway bar disconnects, in theory.

I thought this as well, up until recently and some folks here enlightened me after my little rant about how horrible the was on fireroads between 20-40mph ish

Long story short, the 12mph KDSS thing is for 4Runners and a completely different system

Yeah, I asked him about such thing for the 200 and he said it’s impossible and he’s bummed because he has a 200 as well
