How do I pull this bearing??

I'm in the final stages of rebuilding my transfer case and so far I'm batting 1000 as far as Macgyvering my own bearing and shaft pullers, etc. This little needle bearing inside the shaft has me stumped. Anybody have any thoughts as to how I can get this one out?

Seal Puller - the kind you use a hammer with. You are going to have to tear it up to get it out.

A small sharpened chisel will work. Drive it between the bearing and the shaft until you have ripped out the bearing. And of course wear eye protection.

What I'd try is the packing the bearing in that shaft mostly full with grease, and diving the inner shaft into it with a soft faced mallet.. The shaft might displace the grease, the grease displace the bearing and out it comes? Works for spigot bearings in crank shafts..
 
I had a small needle bearing like that in my 8274 winch that I had to replace. It was pressed into the soft aluminum housiung.
I used the chisel it into peices method. Didnt fudge up the aluminum to bad...new bearing pressed right in.

That needled bearing assembly is just that, an assembly, and the bore of the shaft only retains the bearing; it does not provide a wear surface.


I remove the cage and needle bearings with a chisel, and then use a carbide on a rotary tool to remove the race, if I cannot get it to tear and lift out with the chisel and pliers.

Use the pack it with grease method and find a bolt with an OD slightly smaller than the ID of the bearing. Pop it with a hammer and it should hydraulic out.

I started with the chisel but was worried I'd bugger the shaft, so I took a break to post the question. It was beerthirty anyhow. Thanks for your thoughts, I'll take it up again tomorrow.
 
For those following along at home, I wound up borrowing a blind bearing puller and had it out in no time. I tried the pack it with grease method but couldn't get it. I was tempted to put more time into that method but the desire to just get the damn thing done won out. On to the next project...
 
Packing this type of bearing with grease and trying to force it out hydraulicly will not work, the grease will be forced out between the rollers. Packing with grease will work with bushing, you have a tighter seal with the rod you use as a piston.
 
I used my buddy's Motion Pro blind bearing puller. It's the expanding wedge kind, rather than than the finger type. Pretty slick. I ordered up some wheel bearings for the KTM while I have this available, figured now's the time!

Nice tool. You say KTM wheel bearings....Waddaya got? I have an '04 450 EXC that is due for rear wheel bearings. I plan to drive them out from the opposite side with a drift like I have done on a number of dirtbikes owned through the years. Do you know something I don't??
 
Yep, very nice tool, and the price is right... I have an '07 450 XC-W. It's my 2nd KTM; the first was an '02 400 EXC. Really nice bikes. I've always driven the bearings out the way you have but thought I'd give it a try with the puller while I have it. That sleeve inside the hub may cause this not to work but it's worth a try!
