How do I know if I can readily change the hubs on that axle? (1 Viewer)

been thinking about getting a used custom offroad trailer that I found.
It has some sort of beefy straight axle, with 5 on 5.5 hubs to match a CJ.
No idea how old and haven't not seen in person, don't know if any markings.
I'm wondering if it's likely that I could get 6 on 5.5 to fit readily or not.
Are axles fairly standardized as far as bearing sizes, hubs fitting etc?
Or is this a complete crapshoot and I may be stuck with the 5/5.5 ?

Trailer axles/spindles are rated in weight so you should have no problems in changing hubs for your bolt pattern. Check out Etrailer.com to put you mind at ease.

well, my other trailer has some old axle on it that has a weird size to everything, so not a given I'm afraid. Had a really hard time to find seals for it and I did not even try to find bearings. But I suspect this one is more recent.

Yah I guess there is an exception to everything, just dont buy weird stuff and you should be fine:flipoff2:

Why not just swap the whole axle? Not terribly expensive, and you know you got all standard stuff (and brand new to boot).

That's what I'm planning on doing for my trailer.

the nice thing about a new axle is that one could use a drop down axle with a tweak and have much better ground clearance

Exactly. I'm planning on using a 3" drop axle, and doing SOA at the same time. Should be pretty close to the perfect height for my truck.
