How do I install the starter relay? I'm tired of the intermittent start! (1 Viewer)

No,,,, You have double checked all cables ?? esp one going to your starter solenoid . when you do get it to do it , you need to see exactly what is going on AT the starter.... is your small lug getting 12 V?? that wire is the extension of the blk/whit under your dash (that your RS connects its violet wire to) Doesn't look like you have a starter interrupt installed at any rate from your pictures) If 12v is good at crank position ALL the time on the llittle lug- prob lies at starter- this is not a guessing game

Which is why i informed you weeks back that you had not gotten to the real source of your prob.

These are the spare wires from my ignition interruption removal :hillbilly:

Okay, guys. Thanks. I'll report back after I have done the above.

Well I drove mine to work, then to a friends shop and home yesterday. I have to admit after seeing the crap under my dash I no longer have that warm fuzzy feeling I should have. However now knowing it has been repaired I feel more confident that the problem has been removed.

kino1161 Good luck with yours!

I have no remote start or starter interrupt on mine and have the following issues. I have replace the starter contacts twice with a slight, but temporary, alleviation of the symptoms. I will occasionally have the no start with a distinct click at the solenoid, but most often I just get a very faint click and no start. My solution is to engage the ignition key multiple times until it cranks. This has taken up to 100 times to work, but usually less than ten. No change when I shift to Neutral. Tired ignition circuit?

Well, it got really bad. I took it to my trusty mechanic to see what he thought. He did notice that when it wouldn't crank the headlights did not dim. That showed him that the starter was not engaged. So, I replaced the starter two weeks ago. So far I haven't had any no starts.

Thread hijack?
Today I turned the key and not much happened, a click and no crank. Tried a moment later and got very anemic cranks, barely audible, but then the engine started. Drove it to a nearby grocery. On the way out, this time the first two cranks were good but the final cranks were more labored. Battery voltage seems ok from the dash gauge, will meter it later today. I don't know how old the battery, starter and alternator are, had the 80 for three years now, 174k miles on the odo. Battery completely died once two years ago, never found out why (door ajar?), recovered it with a battery tender, been fine since. Last driven three days ago.

Dont rule out your battery connections. Take them off and clean them good with a wire brush and sandpaper. My tacoma did exactly this and I thought it was the starter or relay but it ended up just being the battery connections. They may look fine connected but you wont know for sure till you take them off and see the contact areas. GL
