I've been having some difficult times starting my 85 fj60. The PO said to fully choke it and pump 4 times before cranking it over. I've been doing this for months now and it always either completely fails to start, or barely starts then dies. After it dies, I try again until it fires up.

Obviously that is annoying.... So yesterday...

I go out to try and start it in a different way. I have been trying different things anytime I don't have to be anywhere, just in case I flooded it. Back to yesterday, It was lower than 20 degrees, I simply pulled the choke fully out, gave it no gas, and it started better than my FI civic. I mean started right up after the first turn! What is up with that?

Pull the choke out fully, put about 1/4 pedal pressure (from pedal to the metal) and turn the key.

You have to sacrifice three chickens on the tuesday after the second full moon of the new year. Then the next winter will be easy starting all the way through, but don't forget the ritual for the next year. ha ha!:)

I finally gave up on the morning rituals, and am going to convert to a 3fe head and injection.

Depends on when I drove it last. If it's been 24 hours or less then I pull the choke out about 1/2 way (I live in SF Bay Area and it never gets THAT cold), pump the accelerator pedal once or twice and it will start right up. If it's been 48 hours or more, then I pull the choke out 1/2 way, pump the petal about four times, crank, repeat, repeat. It usually starts on the thrid attempt.

I use the key. I put it in the ignition and turn it, then vrooom it starts.

Dynosoar :zilla:

Used to have a similar problem (must be an '85 thing)-I would choke it and try to start it and it would go and then always die. Second time around was always money. Just took it in for a tune-up where they adjusted the carb and changed the plugs and now it starts first time with just a little bit of choke (it's been below freezing here lately).

just full choke at first then after 5sec 1/2 way in then after 10 sec no choke just pedal.

if i do choke and pedal it'll flood:(

Choke out all the way, no gas.

On hot restarts, mine will not start with the choke on. Just one pump of the accelerator and crank it.

First start of the day I pump 3 times ,pull choke all the way out , leave the pedal alone ,turn the key and she fires right up.They seem to flood real easy.

i like to just turn the key...

oh wait i have the 3fe never mind.

i kick start mine...

no kidding, i pump like crazy, cholke is only for keeping idle up when its warming up. my friends all make fun of me, but it always starts, rain or shine, cold or hot... but im also sf bay area, so it doesnt get that cold, cept lately its been freezing here over night... wtf, this is cali!

all this choking and pumping, what kind of site is this???

If my wife saw this thread she'd accuse me of viewing porn...again:D "well hell honey, at least I'm reading stories instead of looking at the pictures"

Bay Area: So I pump three times, choke 1/2 out and give her a whirl. Sometimes
she fire's right up, other times idles and dies - in that case I pump twice more and finally we have ignition.

Time for a tune up me thinks. I've heard from many that a cold start rule of thumb is choke 1/2 way and two pumps.

Still works for me

must be a fj60 thing- from day 1 brand new(86fj60), and tuned, it has been hit/miss, mostly miss on cold starting even here in bay area,ca.
toy owner's manual says for cold starts, pull choke fully out and pump 4 times;reality is if it starts , will idle briefly and die. pumping again will only flood it.;waiting a few minutes attempt(s) to restart again, depressing acc pedal lightly and crank. tried with choke part way out- works sometimes.;basically trial and error with alot of luck!
warm/hot starts are usually no problem;just depress acc pedal lightly and crank. at higher elevations a/o winter season- same probs with cold start-multiple attempts with brief idle if any;then dies. after 20years still have not figured out how to do it on first try cold starting!

on my stock FJ62 the followoing process is the only thing I've found that works. FYI my truck has about 170K miles and most likely needs the carb rebuilt.

In the summer depress the gas pedeal one time to the floor and release and it will start just about every time.

In the winter pump the gas pedal a number of times, without touching the choke. Usually takes this sequence about 4 or 5 tries before truck will start. Once it starts you have to feather the throttle, and then pull the choke out and let it high idle for 5-10 mintues to warm up.

If I use the choke at all before trying to start the truck will flood and will not start. THe above is the only process that I've found that works. Once it gets below 40 degrees or so that's when it becomes aggrivating. If you ever smell raw gas, then just stop and come back in 5 min or so to try again. Normally in the winter if the truck floods....I can come back in 5min and it will start fairly quickly.

I belive the manual describes a different way of doing things but on my truck the choke is only useful once the truck actually starts.
