just curious reall i have never been able to use mine from more then 15 feet away is there any way to add an after market antenna to extend the range?

thanks
mike

Mine would work at about 30 feet. I put in an aftermarket Viper brand alarm for about $500 and have been much happier. Remote start and a LCD to show if I remembered to lock it. :D

My brand new one (thanks C-Dan), operates at about 20-25 ft.

I think someone a while back found his antennae wire to be fried or cut and fixed it and achieved much better range....mine only works from 20-30 ft..but sometimres decides to work from 100+ feet

Mine used to work from a distance, now I have to almost stand next to the drivers side door

I pretty much have to be right next to the door for it to work. Both mine and the wife's (although hers has slightly more range than mine does)

As LX stated, assuming you're using the OEM fob, if you hold the end against your chin and press the lock/unlock button, you increase your range significantly. I thought it was BS until I tried it myself.

with both fobs I have to hold mine to my chin or at least above window height and stand next to the drivers door  , tried new batteries I have looked at the antenna wire at both the alarm and up where it terminates near the Glass Breakage Sensor guess I need to look over whole thing and see if there is any damage.

Antennas generally have a one best length bases on frequency but maybe extending this one with a longer wire that for example went around the perimeter of the windshield would give it better exposure to the fob signal?

I've got to be right up on mine, 10 ft. or less for it to work. First vehicle I've ever had with any type of "security" features. Some strange things with it as well. It beeps once for lock, twice for unlock. But only in the morning before the sun gets high in the sky, or late at night when the neighbors are asleep. Sometimes on a cold or rainy day, it will beep. During the day and evening, or when it's warm, it's silent. Sometimes when it's unlocked, I hit the keyfob and it unlocks everything again, then I hit it again, and it locks, but not always the tailgate. So I have to go and see if the tailgate is open, and if it is, I have to unlock and then lock again. Kind of a pain in the ass, and if I'm not paying attention, it's unlocked a lot of the time.

I actually tested mine the other day as the truck was parked a fair distance away and I have a clear view to it. Holding it in my hand at my side I got it to work from 50 large steps (approx 50 yards).

Remembering an old Click and Clack where they talked about holding it under your chin to improve the distance (as LX stated) the distanced increased to about 90 large steps (approx. 90 yards). I was impressed!

This battery is not all that fresh either.

EDIT Mine is stock from 94...

Mine always works from the condo ..... so from my condo to the 80, thats down 4 stories, across to the other side of the building and into the front parking lot . Lots and lots of concrete between me and it .

The other day at work I forgot to lock it in the lot. On the way back to base, I started intermittantly hitting set alarm button, and it worked half a block down the road .. and the 80 was tucked way back into the lot around a huge metal building.

It's a viper though .. not stock.

I believe this is the one I had installed last summer :

Will those tires look good on my truck?

Have you heard of press the button right under your chin method type a thing...? NorCalDoug could be the witnesses

It definitely works on my Trooper remote. No remote on my 80.

fob - the little key chain remote thingy for the alarm. It's a new word invented for this purpose because they didn't currently have a word.

Mine works at 2 feet. sucks. I'll try the chin method.

Right next to the F'ing Cruiser. It drives me nuts!! I've become the "human key fob" as well. I tried the take apart method, removed all the lint, etc., thing is still a P.O.S. I thought about buying a new one from C-Dan, but haven't yet.

I've read somewhere on MUD that the antenna in the truck is the issue. That it's coiled up in a bundle somewhere. I think the Wulf knew the story.

The chin makes some sense as the metal door panels will block the RF and the windows won't.

Riley - with the chin thing, it's not height that does it...it's actual contact with the chin that's required. I've tried holding the remote high, low...all around. It makes no difference. I've tried under the chin without actually pressing against the chin -- no dice.

I think it's using the body (chin/head) as an extended antenna of sorts.
