I'm a new 80 owner, but not new to forums or the toyota world. I've spent most of my time over on pirate and marlin, but my new purchase brought me here
My Dad had a '94 LC from '94-'99 which to this day was his favorite vehicle. My parents also have an '03 4Runner with 228k. My first vehicle was a '92 4runner (DD) and an '85 xtracab. The pickup got all the goodies. 4in lift, locked, duals, armor. I destroyed the truck and had to part it since I was away at college.
Been looking for a new DD for a while now, when my Dad stumbled onto this LX sitting in some ladies yard. It had some super rusty broken step rails on it, but my dad knew what it was, he looked under and saw the frame still had paint on it. She thought it had a bad starter and knew it had a bad exhaust leak. I put a battery in it and she fired right up! After doing research on here I picked up a Bosal exhuast which we just put on and threw new pads and rotors on.
The plan for the 80 is fairly simple. For now I am just cleaning it up and getting it in good running condition. Its a 97 LX450 with 193,000 on it. I want to get it setup for camping and light wheeling. I'm gonna bend up some sliders for it and build a swing out rear tire carrier/bumper. Probably a rear locker as well if I can find one.
so far we have
-cut off old running board
-removed brush guard
-washed/waxed/vaccumed/carpet cleaned
-unplugged sunroof drains
-installed bosal exhaust
-installed brakes
-fixed dented front bumper
-started to wire brush and paint surface rust
-changed oil
-sewed up splits in the leather seats
need to
-install plugs, wires, cap/rotor
-flush radiator
-throw in new air filter
-track down oil leak at the front
-replace PHH
