i have a 83 fj 60, and im having a problem re starting after its reached operating temp. i have to feather the gas to get it to kick, and even then it still runs funky for a minute or two its got a brand new toyota carb, the timing is right, and it runns killer afterwards, i have no clue, any ideas? oh, and hi everyone, my names will.

hey will - welcome!

i have heard that if your carb cooling fan is not blowing on your carb - it will let the carb get to warm and the gas evap's from it. I think it's called vapor lock... Im sure someone will correct me if i am wrong.

not a mechanic - but might be worth looking into. Good luck!

It's only when your engine is hot . ?

I thought in 2 options.

1. Check your batery inder change ( one tester that simulate your starter )
2. Check your starter, meybe need some clean.

Children! Lets go over the "TOYOTA" starting procedure, from the owners manual ONE MORE TIME, shall we?

On cold starts:

Pull the choke all the way out, take the truck out of gear, or step on the clutch. Turn key to start.

On HOT starts:

FULLY DEPRESS THE GAS PEDAL THREE TIMES, take truck out of gear or step on clutch, turn key to start.

ANY other way of starting your truck, while possiable, is not the way it says to do it in the owners manual, so if you have to step on the gas to start the truck, it's absolutely normal.

How many of you do NOT have an owners manual?

FIRST OFF, im not a child, im almost 7, mentally, according to my wife, constantly. secondly, what kind of true man would i be if i read directions? you know, it never occured to me that it would say that in the owners manual, im gonna read it tonite, when no one is around.....................

Disclaimer:

(I actually made the same mistake when I bought the truck, then I bought an owners manual off of e-bay and read it once... amazing the crap they put in there!)

All sorts of cool stuff about not driving in 4lo unless your hubs are locked... why a gas cap is important, etc....

I had the same problem and did not read the manual.

Instead I took my rig to toyota to diagnose and they told me that I had an intake manifold gasket leak. I just finished the job after my rig sat for a few months waiting for me to have time to work on it.

Boy I wish I had read the manual, though I guess it needed to get done. grrrrrrrrrr....

Another tip to avoid replacing the choke cable before 300K mi: press the gas pedal while you're pulling the choke cable.

Still have a good carb fan for sale off my '84 (Vortecs don't need 'em).
