My horn has never worked but today when I was in the garage in total silence working inside the Cruiser I tapped the horn button my mistake and heard a vague horn noise. it seems the horn relay works but nothing coming from the horns themself. What could be the problem? Need new horns?

probably need new horns ,you can try for the fun of it have someone hold the horn button down and wack the horn with something a few times and it may get louder ,could try cleaning up the horn .

I already knocked on the horns with a hammer and nothing.

If you put 12v directly to the horn contact ON THE HORN.....AND....make sure the horn is well grounded, you will know if the horn works.

THEN start testing wires on the way back to the button.

Assuming it may be the horn itself, you can pick up a "bad boy" air horn at harbor freight. Loud, plugs right in with two wires, and no hoses or compressor. (it's all internal) runs about 25.00 on sale.

theres a adjusting screw on the side of the horn with a jam nut around it. loosen the nut and adjust the screw a little at a time.

Learn something new every day. An adjustable horn . . . who'd have thought it?

Put a voltage meter to the horns and they are getting juice. I am going to replace the horns.

Before you buy a new horn, check out Coolerman's website, there's a link to it in his sig line. He's got a write up about restoring a horn and one about testing them. Pretty good stuff, may save you some money...

Thanks Mtrunner. Very cool site.
