Hood Scoop or not?

That's a brave question to ask with this crowd!! The easy answer is get rid of it. However, it's not going to be easy to sell it, and it won't be cheap to get a stock one and have it painted to match. That's a tough one. Hope you can get it back to stock.

Hood, new, in prime, 53301-60250. List $421.07 (plus paint and installation).

Nice looking truck. Unless you want to spend the $$ to fix or replace, I would just leave it alone - I gather it's bolted on vs. tape? If you do a search (on think here, although it may have been on the older version from SOR) there was a very good discussion on hood vents as a way to let heat out of the engine compartment.

IIRC the consensus was that they don't do much.

Cheers, Hugh

Yeah, I don't like it.

Maybe if you put 22's on there and air bags....

Remove it = new hood.
Experiment with making it functional and decide you don't like it = new hood.

Might as well make it functional. If you decide you don't like it, either way it's a new hood.

I think it was Christo that said trying to jam more air in with a scoop without a good line for it to go out was not a good idea. Also, when I considered a scoop, I had hoped to get it to force more air through the rad which won't happen on an 80 with the design. I suppose the scoop might work backwards with air coming in the front and out the scoop but doubt it. It was suggested to me back on SOR < by Landtank > to go with louvers which is what I ended up doing. Your call on what to do with it.
Another consideration if you choose to make it functioal is the hood supports underneath. If you cut them out you could end up a little limp. Leaving them in and you may not gain much airflow depending on the scoop location. Anyway, it's your ride so you da man.
Here is a pic of the underside of the hood without the blanket if it helps you.

I say try to make it functional. I would not buy a new one though one way or the other. It's what, like 4 bolts? 6 max? Worse comes to worse, have someone weld them shut for you and get some touch up paint. Heck, if you were close to NJ, I'd swap hoods with you.

I think the scoop looks good, but if you do open up the hood to make it functional at least it's not just for looks. I would at least add a supercharger, so it's not just an empty boast of power. See, now you've got a great excuse to spend $3500 more for the SC.

Its already got a Super Charger.

Looks like the PO was trying to make the LC look like a 4-Runner with the hood scoop, adding the super charger, and the 4-Runner rims. I'd ditch the hood.

BTW- Great looking 97!

Waggoner,

You've lessened your chances of success but this is what you might try.

1. Make a bunch of posts here, on 80sCool, and on PBBS with pics and some HP/top speed/torque/cooler air statistics. Make the stats believable.

2. Lure some unsuspecting dude that has to have every new gimmic. You'll have to find one with a sage 40th so maybe Junk, Photo, or MTS.

3. Offer the hood for $1500 and let them talk you down to $1000 plus exchange of their hood. Photo's is already gimmicked so you'll have to get $2500 from him.

4. Do the swap and buy something to give that stock truck a manly look.

5. Under no circumstances should you take it off and pay $500 to $1000 for another when you're needing a front bumper, sliders, and a winch. If you can't stand the thing then pull it off and slap some black rosette washers and SS bolts in the holes. Maybe you can rig us some more washer jets and really soak down the windscreen when needed. I've heard the ones from a Lexus GS300 will spray a wide swath and should hook right up.

:)

I don't think it looks bad. As if the aerodynamics of a brick aren't good enough, let's see if we can create more drag by scooping air into an empty pocket. I say keep it try to make it functional. IMO

I'm gonna leave this one alone as it seems a hot issue for some..........

But I have an OT question: What tires do you have on that rig??? (Starting to look for tires, so that seems to be the first thing I look at...for now.)

I believe those to be BFG AT in 315/70 R16. (35x12.50)

Yes or no? I bought this truck this way. Scoop is bolted on and is non functional. I will either:
-make it functional and leave it
-sell it as is, and go stock

What do ya'll think?

Gary,

When that truck was on ebay, someone here posted a link and it became an absolute inferno in here as one after another flamed the scoop and the wheels. I don't think it looks so bad, and could really appreciate it if it were functional and did help cool the SC'd engine. (No, I will not swap hoods with you...unless you want to swap suspensions as well!!)

I say make it functional, then line it up with the 61 and the 62, take a few pics, post 'em, and see if anyone even notices the scoop!

BTW, if/when you change out the front bumper, can I borrow the stock one so that Janae can get around while I'm repainting the ARB!?

Oh, and are you gonna go OEM wheels, or someting like Laird just went to?

I wouldn't worry with the wheels --- IMO they look good. Nice looking truck. If you decided to remove the hood scoop could you just have the holes filled?
