Hello everyone. Just found out I have to move overseas and contemplating on whether to sell or ship my 2000 LC. I have done a lot of work on the vehicle and don't really know what price I would ask for if I decided to sell? Just kinda disappointed because I bought the vehicle 2 months ago and have done all the work with brand new parts. See below:

Total of work and parts equals $24, 223.22. This does not include the purchase of the vehicle. And I know I cannot expect to recoup all of the money in a sell, but I do have all the paperwork to backup.

The first section of work has been done at a Toyota dealership and is under warranty:
-New 710 Battery
-Replaced the valve cover gasket
-Replaced power steering pump, reservoir, and hoses
-Power Steering fluid flush
-Had the front and rear differentials serviced
-Transfer case serviced
-Left and right CV axles replaced with new boots
-Replaced Fuel Filter and Oil Change
-Front wheel bearings replaced
-Had all Head cylinder, throttle body, exhaust pipe, intake manifold gaskets replaced and internals cleaned of the cylinder head and rear main housing.
-New Radiator
-New Temp Sensor and O2 sensor
-ALL FIVE door lock actuators replaced
-new spare tire carrier

Work done at 4Wheel Parts:
-Old Man Emu Suspension (Sport Shocks, NitroCharger Sport Shocks, Medium rear coils, Torsion Bar)
-Straightened steering wheel
-4 Methode Wheels with BF KO2 tires 275/70R17 (1000 miles on them)
-ARB Bull Bar
-XRC 9.5k lbs winch
-Front Tie rods replaced

Misc Work:
-Had small rust above windshield, so I had a body shop replace the windshield (broke taking out), sand out all rust and repaint.
-Had all body scuffs on vehicle sanded and repainted
-All door rocker panels repainted
-Basically the paint job makes the vehicle look brand new with zero rust anywhere on the truck (outside or under body as the truck has been a southern vehicle)
-Brand new Brakes and rotors on all wheels
-New Horn
-All lights replaced, headlights for low and high beam replaced with high intensity
-New Leather seat covers from IGEE
-New ABS Skid control module computer ($1800.00)

I know there is a ton more I am forgetting! I basically wanted to make this vehicle as solid as possible so it could run another 200k miles. Outside doesn't look as bas ass as other 100 series, but the internals are solid. Interior is nice and everything works on the vehicle except the dreaded light in the dash to let you know you're in drive. Had two people at the Toyota dealership ask if I would sell before I even considered it, never talked pricing though. Also, timing belt has been replaced twice, both at the appropriate mileage interval. Clean carfax and never been in an accident.

That is tough... I would say that the upper end that I see as possible (at least for a reasonable time to sell) is maybe 15k. The issue is that it sounds like much of what you did doesn't offer much return (parts cost maybe). A large amount of the 24k seems like it is labor.

TL;DR: You're hopelessly upside down in this car, and there's no way you're getting money out of your "investment" over the last 2 months.

1) Most of your costs are for re-conditioning or maintenance, you're not likely to see much return on those costs at all.

2) Your costs (not including the vehicle) exceed what most would be willing to pay for a great condition, low mileage, late model 100 series, and you've got a earlier model with nearly 200,000 miles.

If you can wait for the right buyer, and you might be able to get $15K.
If you're in a time crunch to sell, because you're heading overseas, you may have to go a little lower still to sell faster.

Yeah I think it would just be beneficial for me to keep it and pass it on to one of the kids in about 4 years. Its a shame the big ticket items like the engine overhaul don't add much value. Should have kept my 2016 4runner TRD pro ha! Thanks for the input everyone.

Looks like a really clean rig; good luck on your sale!

Man, you should definitely keep that in the family. Pass it on to the kids! Shoot, with all the work you've done over the last couple months, you can enjoy it yourself for the next 18 years headache free!

you got Jobbed paying 24k in service and parts for that truck... but live and learn.

IMO
Truck- 8k
bumper and winch- 2k
lift-500
tires-500
flat brim bro rims (-)500.

Value is $10,500.

I think my best buyer would be someone who would keep it for a long time and realize the $7k in parts from 4WheelParts (and no I don't think the method, "flat brim bro" rims would take the price down $500, your opinion like you stated but another will appreciate the quality), brand new KO2s, $4k for the engine restore (every single seal and gasket replaced and internals cleaned), $1k for the new radiator, $1.6k for brand new cv axles, $1.3 for band new power steering, fresh paint job, clean interior and no exterior rust, and actually having all the paperwork and a solid maintenance trail would add some value on top.

Plus I got the vehicle for $4k so I saved some money there, got the engine rehab and radiator done for free from the Toyota dealer (long story). So technically 19k into it. But yes, still underwater on value.

I am obviously losing money on it, but I am also saving money because i don't have a $600 car payment and $100 less insurance a month on my TRD Pro for the next 4 years haha ($33.6k saved). Lke I said my original intentions were to keep the vehicle, not turn it for a profit, so I was able to justify the extra costs...

Is $18k too much of a stretch for a headache free, awesome 100 series basically "restored" with quality components and looks and drives awesome?

Yeah honestly for 18K one can get a very nice, low mileage 06-07 hundy...sorry but you'd also need to find someone that have 18K in cash to buy the truck, the book value on this is around 7-8K so finding a bank to finance that would be very difficult.

I say keep it and enjoy it, she looks fantastic, and i'm sure runs like a champ too with all the work you put into it.

Nice truck. Just my opinion but I wouldn't pay more than 12k. 2000 is probably the least desirable year, and it's got 200k on it. Getting it caught up on all the deferred maintenance is money you won't get back.

Tough love, but thanks for all the honest opinions.

The vehicle looks, sounds, and undoubtedly is, amazing, but the issue is, the engine rebuild is not like a maintenance item or timing belt. These engines don't "need" to be rebuilt at whatever mileage you did. Not like an 80 where seeing the head was done at a certain mileage is a big plus. therefore it is unlikely to bring any extra value.

replacements/repairs of stock items are rarely seen as bringing value to the vehicle. Especially with these vehicles because so little goes wrong, it's almost seen as unnecessary for certain items. With any vehicle, items that were repaired/replaced are seen as just being brought back to stock. When people are buying cars they don't add up the price of the maintenance history. That is a cost of ownership.

The above is also why agree with certain members about not replacing stuff that isn't broken or about to go. You are certainly losing money by doing that. Did all five door lock actuators really need to be replaced?

As for the accessories, it is ALWAYS the story with 4WDs that they do not hold the value of their accessories with them.

How much is it to ship it? doing a quick google says it will cost about 1k to hawaii. I think you'll find that to be a much better decision because:
-no car payment
-you're confident that it will run for quite awhile
-you're not "losing" the value of your accessories, because you're keeping them and being able to use them.

Good info. Yeah deff decided to keep, plus you good ole American tax payers are picking up the dime on shipping! Overall, the kids love it, I love it, would be happy to pass it down to one of the boys once they start driving. Just not many places to enjoy it on an island 40 miles wide!!!

The more I think about it, the more I nailed the price at $10,500. Im a purist, so black fake beadlocks are no bueno. Id much prefer stock period correct 16's with fat BFG rubber. The exterior looks awesome, the ARB bumper is glorious, and you have new leather seat skins... not SH*ting on your truck, just giving you my .02.

Does the truck have stock NAV? if so, take another 1k off the value.

That’s a matter of opinion  2000 is the most desired year for myself. No nav, upgraded front diff, glass headlights, etc

Ship that bastard to Hawaii, and wheel the hell out of it. Perfect truck for hawaii. Seriously jealous. No lose the rims :-)
