Hone-O-Drive FJ40 installation

So, about a year ago, I scored what I thought was a Fairey OD. Come to find out, it is an old hone-o-drive OD.

I’ve recently decided that this will go into my most driven FJ40. I enjoy the 4:10 gearing offroad but it has gotten old for extended treks. Really anything over 10 miles one way. I want to be able to start trying longer treks like driving to events, trails, etc. I’m trusting that this is the solution.

Notice the mathematical equation on this cool manual that Brian @whitey45 sent me. Thanks! At 60 mph, I’d rather be at 2000 rpm than almost 3000. It is a 30% od!

I just ordered a t case gasket kit from cruiser outfitters and I will soon drop off my rear drive shaft to have it shortened 210 mm’s as per the manual. Only thing I’ve done is clean and degrease the t case / od.

Specs are:
Original, tired F.
Three on tree
4:10 gearing
33 KO2 mud terrains

1. I wouldn’t get the driveshaft done until the overdrive is installed. I like to take my own measurements, even if it’s only an 1/8” difference.

2. Hone drives are more notoriously weak than Fairey, so I’d be giving that OD a real thorough check before installing. The small helical gears cut into each other fairly quick if the shafts that they ride on aren’t up to snuff.

Only you would know anything about a pretty rare od! The one I have has bad gears as well. The weird thing is I have old school hot rod muscle car in my blood. The hone o drive was used in the the late 60’s by Joel Rosen owner of Baldwin Motion, the late 60’s icon of building the wild 67,68,69 Camaro’s and other gm cars. They ran 500hp l88 427 bbc, with an m22 Muncie 4spd and 4.88 gears!! Guess what they put between it to run on the street!! The hone o drive!!! Btw are worth a lot to the Camaro guys building a motion car!( they are different than the cruiser one) I sold one 10 years ago for 3k! Anyway, they were known to withstand 500 plus horsepower back in the day!

I don’t doubt that they could hold up to HP...as long as everything was kept up to snuff. The problem is they seen to have required more regular maintenance intervals than people were accustomed to ( think LC drum brakes!) Consequently, you could use the gears to shave with by the time they were opened up to find out what the whining noise was!
