Anybody got some. Let me see what ya got guys. I want to make one.

For $250 you can buy a Safari Snorkel. Why mess around with fabing your own?

It won't look as good. (Unless you're good at fabrication), and will probobly cost more then just buying one.

But that's just me.

I would also just save up for one just as Doc stated. I'm thinking about purchasing one as soon as I get some extra cash.

You have to cut a hole in the fender to install one of these?

I belive so.

Actually, IIRC, it's five holes, one big enough to put a beer can through, the other four for mounting the body of the snorkle to the fender. Oh, and three more small holes on the a-pillar to secure the snorkel's collar.

Snorkels are for looks. They have limited functionality.

Are you really going to submerse your truck up to the headlights in water? If so, get a snorkel, if not, don't bother.

People have said they help when riding in caravans, but in caravans the dust rises.

On interstates heat rises.

I like snorkels and I would love to have one, but I don't want to spend the money on something that does not improve the truck besides the looks; especially for the money.

If I was rich, hell yeah, get a snorkel, at least you will look cool.

i have had my truck in water up to the bottom of the head lights with out a snorkle and it is damn scary, i dont think i want to have it any deeper than that. eeek

I don't understand the rage for a snorkel on a FJ anything. Water that deep will kill the igntion on any FJ submersed that deep. The coil, plug wires, dizzy, and plugs are all located lower than the intake. If you were in a BJ or other diesel then it would make more sense and you could run in water until the cabin filled up so bad you would have to swim out of her.

One more coment................

The more holes you put in your vehicle
(exiled knows) the more your calling your freind rust to have a party.

This is the reason why I haven't gotten one for my FJ, because after I think about it in the long run I don't want to be running into extra rust problems.

ive got my dizzy wet but never my coil. the coil on my truck is above the intake. 2 more things....first of all when making a water crossing that deep you want to create a wave in front of your pig, so the water behind it is lower than the water line. making the water that does make it into your engine about 6inchs lower. second i spray my dizzy with wd-40 inside and out to futher water proof and have water sealant on the o-ring. in florida the trails will more than likly have a water crossing a deep one. i would like a snorkle just for the fact that if my front end ever finds a deep enough hole to dunk my whole hood under that it will at least keep air out of intake, i t may stall but at least that it will keep water out of the really bad stuff ;)

p.s. any of you guys ever do a deep water crossing....i was suprised how much it slows the truck down..

~ 8 lbs to the gallon. it's heavy stuff. imagine how much your displacing.

would di-electric grease be better for your dizzy lowtideride? i'm not too familiar with that application.

We still have not seen homemade pictures though. there are some funky looking elephant jobs out there.

I didnt have a home made BUT on a fj40 and a EFI 4Runner we die-electric greased all plugs and dizzy with the stock covers and WD40 both have gone deaper than the hood.... water whgt REALLY hurts you keep it in low and DONT SHIFT you will loose your clutch fast the 40 sat at the folding line for the window for 30 min running while we wincher her out cause the clutch stoped working after hitting a rock under water and pullling a 3 point turn ARB rocks

Just went through 4 1/2 feet about a week and a half ago after Jeane (I think? it was one of damned canes) and was really glad I had a snorkel on the rig. And yes even with 350 hp it really slowed her down and scaird me, well maybe a little.

since putting our snorkel in, i've noticed that my air filter lasts nearly twice as long.
I don't caravan a lot, but we do have very dusty roads, it helps. Not a miracle worker, but it helps.

But my rational is as follows: around here, many of the tourist busses run snorkels. They aren't fording deep rivers and they aren't too concerned with looks. Toyota and other mfr's put them on there at the factory for a reason and I believe that reason is that the improve the quality of the air intake.

Same observation for many trucks that extend their air intake-- they are already several feet higher than most cars, yet they run it up to the roof. It happens often enough that I believe there is some evidence that it helps.

And of course, they look really cool too, which is nice. In fact, of all the things that people ask about, the snorkel is the #1 most noticed.

ahhh forgot about that. NEVER shift while in the drink. another eekkk

...there is pics in the tech section..

I am trying to post some pics, but for some reason is not allowing me!

they have to be jpeg and 800x600 and under 80kb i think
