I'm getting ready to take on a homemade slider project. Slee's, Metal Tech and so on are out of my budget right now. I did a search and found a couple threads, but they are so old the pics are not there anymore. So if you made your own or have some ideas, hook me up.

I tried to start a thread a while ago so Ill help you out by getting this one going.

To add to your request, it would be cool if ppl could take detailed pictures of their cat guard/front ps outrigger solutions since that part of the slider build is the biggest pain in the ass.

My sliders are made from 1/8th rectangular 1.5x3" tube and I plan to weld them on. I used the same tube for the outriggers but I laminated them with 1/4" plate and incorporated gussets in said plate that tie into the frame plates. The dimple died lookin gusset is 1/4" thick and may or may not serve a purpose.. I bent back and pounded the rocker pinch welds, this allowed me to run the outriggers straight out from the frame with room for flex.

I still need to finish the last outrigger on the ps side (the one that will be under the cats), heres the plan(s) I sketched out.

The skid would run from the 1st outrigger to the 2nd outrigger and be bolted there. The skid/1st outrigger would be removable as one unit to make any future exhaust work simple.

I have 50$ plus consumables (welder/plasma/grinding discs) in them so far. The 50$ was spent on 24' of rectangular tube. I scored the round kickout tube for free from a buddy and I already had the plate.

Darwink,

Those look sweet. Thanks for the input

The problem w the FAQ is that a lot of the threads only have "after" shots that dont show detail and in some threads the pictures are no longer there period. When I was searching for ideas I only found maybe 5-6 threads that applied to what I wanted to build (Im not counting the 5000 Hanna/Slee threads which incidentally make up half of the FAQ).

More detailed pictures like the ones Darnold posted compiled into one thread would help in my opinion.

This is a great thread. It shows the craft and ingenuity of the subscribers. I have made a couple roof racks and bumpers for my syncro vanagon and now i have to do the same to my newly acquired 80.
Did most of you use a plasma cutter?

What did you use to make the bend of the tubes?

thanks everyone. I will be making my sliders soon!!

Iptman, take some pics of how the cat guard mounts at the frame if you can.

To make my bends I borrowed my buddies pipe bender with his "modified" pipe dies that bend tube. If you have one of these princess auto style benders you can run a couple beads of weld down both sides of the die (inside lip) then grind smooth. The tube will fit better inside the die and it will no longer kink and distort. I did mine by eye using a line down the center of the tube as reference.

High tech isnt it?

I useed the plasma for 98% of the sliders, a grinder for the round tube. I would have preferred a chop saw for both types of tube but I havent found the right one (read free lol) yet. Honestly you can make just about any cut with a grinder , its just a bitch after a while.

The plasma is a chirry cut 50 and the welder is a lincoln 180 mig.

thanks for the info. i have a chop saw and was thinking of investing in a plasma so then i can really go crazy. I used to design and make furniture out of metal (beds, table, etc. ) so still have a lot of metal lying around. I love this part of designing and building to really feel like the cruiser is yours.

Great stuff guys!!

I've heard good things about the Harbor Freight bandsaw. Much easier than a chop saw....set it, and forget it!

(Actually don't. But you don't have to hover over it.)

AZ, is the cat guard removable? Are the sliders bolt or weld on?

D

Cool, thanks. Those are the kind of pics a home fabber needs.
