Hi all. I just registered today....but have been lurking around this site for a few months. I have been a cruiser owner since March...and...it was this site & all the informative data from all of you that helped me make the jump.

Anyway, I thought Id start a thread specifically for those of you who have or are interested in adding an air compressor to your Cruiser; but, don't want to pay big bucks for a new unit. If this thread duplicates any past threads (I've looked & didn't find much on this topic), please politely tell me to buzz off. Otherwise, I would like to gather some data on the first mod I plan to do on my 97 Collectors Ed. 80.

From what I have gathered so far, it seems that the best converted compressor is an older York unit from '70s-80's volvo, AMC, F150 vehicles. Do any of you know any York part number/model number data I should be looking for on compressors as I do the junk yard search?

Also, has anyone fab'd up a bracket to mate a York compressor to a 97? If so, I would be willing to buy the plans from you. The compressor & bracket are the biggest unknowns for me. I am fairly confident I can cover the rest of the design (tank, press. sw., control circuit, hose & hard pipe, etc.).

Thanks. BTW, what a nice rig the Cruiser is! I am a life-long Toyota owner....4-Runner, Tacoma and now a Cruiser. :grinpimp:

First of all, welcome aboard general :flipoff2:

Thanks for perusing and reviewing before posting :)

Onboard air has been discussed in the past, but...that doesn't necessarily mean it can't be covered again -- we've had lots of new members recently who might be interested.

I did a quick search on: air + compressor + york
in the 80series section and came up with this link:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=5069

hopefully you find some of the information useful.

Thanks. I checked out the link.....very good information. I am still not sure what I'll do. Maybe someone could post a pic of an 80 with a York OBA.

Look in tech for general york information.

They are cheap, plentiful, move lots of air, and last.

You are by far most likely to find them in older volvo's. Found two in 10 minutes in the local Pull-a-part.

Napa also has rebuilt ones for ~$100.

There are several difference displacements, all easily identifiable by their model #'s. Look in Tech for this info.

I set up one in my 40 using purchased brackets, and I would never consider anything else for that truck.

I would be nice if someone figured out mounting in an 80. I just don't have time. :o

I got a York from a older KW semi.
I have yet to install it on anything. I am sure it needs to be rebuilt as it has many more miles than a AMC could ever have :D

Thanks for all the good info. I'm on my way to the local junk yard this week. :)

Here's a pic of my York install in progress, it's simple and very effective. If memory serves, the York came out of a Volvo 240DL car, probably in the 80s vintage. This York is 9 cubic inches size, which is plenty for what I need. The air reservoir consists of both sliders and a 2.5 gallon air tank. This system can run my air ratchet, die grinder, impact wrench and blow up tires all day long. I haven't used it to re-seat a bead yet.

The fresh air intake is coming from the oem air filter canister. The hole is directly in the center, on the bottom side. The outlet hose goes through a air/oil separator before entering the system. The inlet and outlet fittings (A/C fittings to 1/2" NPT male) and high temp hose came from www.onboardair.com. The pressure switch is 80 (on) and 105 (off).

Let me know if you have any questions.

I had a V belt pulley laying around that was the correct diameter, oddly enough from a Range Rover and this pulley was welded to the crankshaft pulley that's on the vehicle currently. I don't know if a 2F pulley would simply bolt in front of the 1FZFE pulley but it's worth investigating. Anyway, after the two pulleys lined up, I used a simple Autzone belt to run the York. There's no tensioner pulley currently. Howeer, I need to work on building a tensioner so that it'll be easy to replace the belt by using a slightly larger belt.

When I return home this week, I'll snap a few pics of the finished product so that all of this makes sense. Sorry for the confusion!

Ali- You can eliminate the oil/water seperator by performing the oil port block mod that Charlie Glabe wrote up in tech. It really eliminates almost all the oil expelled by the compressor.

With this mod I don't find it necessary to run a filter.

I've done this mod but due to the age of my York, I can onlly assume that's why I'm still getting some oil coming out.

I think we were on the same trail outside of Tride. I had to share that particular trail with a backhoe last year! Imagine my surprise when I came around a corner and  this guy was coming down from doing a trail repair further up hill. Anyway, he had maneuver the cab so that it swung around at the same rate as we inched by!
