OK, I have an 87 2f with a holley carb and desmog from PO. Truck runs but not well. Choke light is on constantly and truck is running very rich. I have been through several nights of searching the various carb threads and this is what I have learned.

1) Jim C is the Aisan man! And this is the preferred carb on the board.
2) Downey is the Holley man!

I have a rebuilt Aisan (cruiser parts purchase). I would like to run the stock air box for filter reasons. I have some major concerns about putting the Aisan on with the desmog job done by PO.

Please lend some advice as I am new to the landcruiser world and don't want to spend a great amount of time with an inoperable rig trying to get this holley switched out. Any good advice as to a reasonable starting point is appreciated.

Downey/Jim C... If you read this please post up...

Thanks to all.

First, I am not a Holley fan. I have had two of them on two different Land Cruisers and they performed the worst of all the carbs I have ever tried. The trick to get them in the ballpark is a constant 6PSI of fuel pressue, you may need to get a regulator. You will need a vent baffle to keep it from flooding although it still will to some extent. I don't remember what jets work since it seems to need something different every day, but the power valve should be a number no greater than 4.5 and you might want to look into a reduced flow power valve. The 4.5 is the manifold vacuume at which it closes, so as vacuume drops BELOW 4.5" it will open to enrichen things, but they seem to flow more then the 2F can digest. I tried all the reccomendations that Downey offered me when I last had one, but it was still a whore, although there were good days when the stars aligned and it ran great. Then I'd take it off-road and the hate came back. I loved my Weber, I ran it for years and years and never had to touch it after tuning it in for my rig and elevation. I never tried the stock carb without the smog stuff; with the smog equipment is was gutless dog.

Thanks Lehiguy!!! My main concern is getting a good running machine. I would like to run stock airbox or a custom. I have major concerns trying to run a stock carb with the current desmog job. I have looked at several desmog threads and I am definitely missing parts that seem necessary.

Part of my reason for posting is to decide whether or not to go with weber replacement (seems best without sourcing a lot of parts) or learning the holley...

Thanks again and I am looking forward to either challenge. I just want the best running rig....

Get rid of it....I have had them in the past...nothing but jetting and stalling issues.

FJ40 Jim is the man you need

Holley Carb Help/Weber

Ok, so I have a line on smog equipment that may work. Other solution is going to a weber. Any recommendations on a weber carb? Is the MAF kit that allows the use of the stock airbox worth the extra $$.

Maybe look at an earlier stock carb...maybe like a '74ish, with the mechanical secondary? They don't seem to need all the other smog stuff to run...

oem....is the best....just saying

He would have to send the stock carb to Jim and have it set up for a Non Smog unit. Passages will need blocked or crossdrilled or what ever Jim does to them.

With the 57' of vaccum line missing, he cannot just bolt on a stock Asian and expect performance out of it without Jim desmogging the carb.

(I have a Holley 350 on my 40 and Love it once I installed the "Off Road kit" in it)

:DJimbo might have a junk one laying around...or check fleabay.

Are you running a header? Or stock intake/exhaust manifolds?

Holley Carb Help/Weber

Running a header. Probably MAF 6 to 1. Flowmaster 40 series and 1.5 pipe. When I get everything figured out I plan on continuing to run a header and most free flowing muffler but I might add an after market high flow cat...

I know Jim C is the man for stock carbs and I don't mind spending the $ with him for a carb build or shop time. However I don't want to do that and source parts as well. I plan on PMing Jim to see what my options are with him and time frame. I am reasonably close to Lancaster.

What are your thoughts?

Again thanks to all this is a great board!

Like I said, I like the earlier carbs. Mechanical secondaries is fun to play with. It's adjustable and stuff. since you got a header, you could put an early Toyota Hi-Po intake manifold and an early carb (I'm running a '74) and have two vacuum lines. One to the dizzy, one to the throttle positioner.

Thanks Pig...!

Now if I go this route do I need a different intake or just some machining? I am game for this just need to know what I am getting into.

As I mentioned before...I have a running rig and I just need to make sure that come Monday morning she's running again.

Thanks!:)

I think an early intake manifold/carb setup will be about 1/2" shorter than stock, you'd need to make a sleeve to make up the difference between the carb intake and the air cleaner. This has been done before.

Since the truck already has hillbilly desmog, you can take the gloves off. Just install the Aisan and cap every vac fitting on it.

Leave the one hose on the carb that connects from air horn front fitting to the CB, and get +12V and Grd. to the ICS. Run a vac hose from ported vac to the dissy vac advancer.

It is nice to have a canister and vent system and decel fuel cut, etc, but not a requirement.

Thanks Jim! I have a line on some smog equipment. Checking on year model etc. If I am going to run the Aisan I would like to have the fuel decel cut etc. I'll keep in touch. I sent a PM inquiring about work or perhaps I would send you the carb I have.

Thanks to all who have responded.

i run a holly carb from a 85 dodge ram w/318 stock air box dui dizzy i've been straight up a long hill and no problems .... been almost on my side and still no problems the motor runs great 19-20 inches of vac @ idle and 15- 17 inches of vac @ 65mph on flat ground getting about 15 mpg on highway also i'm desmoged ..... my 2 cents

I'd be curious to know how that is set up. Does it have a vent baffle, jet extenders, what's the power valve, center or side pivot float, spring loaded needle or not, etc, etc. I'm a bit miffed that I could never get them to work in the snotty situations, on road they worked for me, but that does not help in Land Cruiser territory.

My current thoughts are to go with a Weber from MAF and run the stock air box. I would like to know Jim's thoughts about the weber set up vs. the stock carb with the set up he mentions.

End Quote from Jim:

Pardon me, I didn't quite get the quote deal correct.

Also, I would like to know more about the Holley carb set up you are running Cando...
