Ho Do I remove the roof on the FJ40?

Hello, I just joined and this is my first post. I bought a 1969 (I think?) fj40. My fj40 sat since 1986 under cover but still has surface rust and major rust issue with the rain gutter. Part of it needs to be completely replaced and parts seem mostly surface rust issues. Anyone know where you could buy premade sections (vs entire kit) and weld in to existing gutter? Or anyone in Northern California want a job restoring my gutter?

I don't know of anyone who sells pieces of raingutters. Mine are $200 + shipping vs CCOT's $349. I only have a few left and I don't really want to split one up. I am getting more kits soon.

Yep.... remove all the bolts and it will come off. Some hidden ones over the doors too.

yup and the hidden ones over the doors can be removed but you have to slide or pop out the metal piece that faces the door.

speaking of the metal piece that faces the door (would this be considered the bow cover?)...anyone have trouble sliding this piece out? it's a mandatory step in order to expose the bolts that connect it to the rain gutter. one of mine slid out easily, but i tore up the other one trying to get it out. i hope these are easily replaceable.

anyone know who sells a bolt kit to attach the rain gutter to the sides? i can a kit for about everything but those.

nope thats the piece i refered to earlier that you have to pop out to acess the raingutter bolts, the visor piece is riveted into the front of the top.

In post #21 in the first picture the visor is the piece that is laying in the center of the raingutter

Just removed roof off 69 fj40

I took off the roof, then the sides and the rest of the top. I grinded off the rivets and popped off the gutter. It is shot. It is in one piece so I can use it as a sample for the new gutter I have to weld together. So what is the best way to clean off the crap from the top. I used a 4inch wheel to clean off the big stuff but it seams that the liner has been glued to the gutter and roof. to get it off I either need to grind very carefully of just clean and fill with cauking. What the best? I think it may be best to grind it down to the roof material being careful not to nick roof. If I do then I get another project patching the fiberglass roof. Also headliner or paint? Nothing worse than a sagging headliner. Any recommendations. Maybe I can have it sprayed with truck bed liner.

i got this from joan fabrics. its just basic headliner but it will look pretty good when its done. i got a little extra so i can make an arm rest for a center console im gonna make. i got 4 yards for like $50. if you look in the sunday newspaper theres a 40% off coupon and it will be even cheaper. im not really sure how im gonna glue it on tho, i have never had that great of results with spray on glue so im not sure about that. i think the headliner acts more than just looks it acts like insulation also. maybe it dampens sound too??? hope this helps

Ive done 4 of these roofs from replaceing sections to resealing the entier gutter,never once did I get the roof reriveted without warping it.They still went on the sides,but the sides have to be on the rig and loose.

The PO of my rig did this, and replaced the rusted/rotted out raingutter with fiberglass with awesome results.

There are some excellent photos and info. I think he is still lurking on this site, so you may also be able to PM him (AndyM) for advice. Goood luck!!

*EDIT* lol.. just noticed how old this original thread is. I assume you finished your raingutter project. But, if they have rusted again in the last 9 months, you can now replace them with fiberglass!

I know this is an old post but rather then start a new one I thought I'd use this one since it has a picture of the piece I need help on.

On post #21 there is the windshield mount that attaches to the cap. What is the proper way of attaching this piece onto the cap?

I just did this last week, and I used regular ole 3/16" pop rivets. They are nice and flush on the outside, and I used herculiner on the inside (in place of a headliner), and you can barely see the rivets. Just use some caulk to seal them on the outside.
