So my brakes are feeling like they might need some attention and I'm wondering if an upgrade might be in order. Has anyone done the 4Runner upgrade on the brakes of an HJ61? I'm thinking of replacing the master cylinder and the booster if possible. Would I need to do something different with the proportioning valve? Or would I be better off just getting a new master cylinder and not messing with all the above?

I'm only running the S13W 4R V6 calipers and hydro booster .. but read somewhere here in the forum about a non bolt on tundra rotors and caliper .. I'll look for that thread ..

I'm less interested in calipers and rotors and more interested in the booster and master cylinder upgrade. I recently purchased new replacement calipers because one was freezing up and causing the rig to swerve to one size while braking. Now the pedal feels very soft and I'm looking to improve the braking feel.

All of your brake upgrades will be indentical to that of an fj60. Lots of good info out there In the 60 section. I am personally switching to all fzj80 components minus the ABS system. Pretty certain that the booster/master bolt right up but don't quote me on that..

I fitted the non abs 80 series booster to my hj75 as you can see in the pic below I had to extend the shaft by 1 inch and the booster needs to be turned upside down for the bolts and offset to align. it's not a problem but the vacuum hose needed to be extended by around 2 inches to reach the other side from where the 75 used to be. The 80 booster is a twin diafram unlike the single they run on the 60 and 75 series.

Did the 75 have a LSPV? If so how did you replace it?

I have a LSPV on the rear diff housing no need to replace as it works fine. If your 60 is lifted you need to extend the rod the same length as the lift.

Can you explain this a little bit? I'm confused why the rod length coming out of the booster would be effected by a lift?

Sorry mate I thought you where referring to the load sensor valve on the rear diff
Gotcha, you had me going for a minute! Lol

So, I think I'm going to look at a 80 series booster and master cylinder (non ABS) as an upgrade. Any final thoughts before I purchase?

I would try it with your stock master cylinder first before upgrading to the larger 1 inch. My larger piston slave cylinders are working great with the stock 60/75 master and 80 booster. When fitting the extension get it right with careful measurements as you need to get as close as posable. The master and booster have very thin paper gaskets try and save them if make new if there stuffed.

Did the same on my BJ74. Here is a side by side comparison (80 series on the left). Also installed larger vacuum reserve canister.

The booster add states two brand names ask if they have the Aisin in stock for shipping. Also have you thought about the booster extension because it's not a plug and play with out it.

Following because lately I have been thinking about upgrading the brakes on my HJ61 too. Are you just going to be doing the front? or are you going to convert the rear to disc as well?

Had a hj61 with drums and now have a HZJ77 with disks. Disks are nice but not nice enough to warrant the hassle for switching over. Adjusted properly drums are outstanding. Leave em but do the booster. I want to do mine too this spring so as you continue a step by step with pictures would help others

Gotcha, for some reason I thought that was adjustable. I'll make note and get it as close as I can to the original spec. I'll order parts tomorrow and update the thread as I go. I recently replaced my calipers with rebuilds in the front and will have the rears adjusted at the time of install of the new booster/MC.
