Hello HJ60 guru's. I asked Mr. Hanna of Hanna Quality about getting some sliders like ole Pizmo Jim has. Mr. Hanna sent me THIS:

"We are making sliders for the FJ60, however I do not know if the
sliders will fit a HJ60. Is the HJ60 cross member for the transfer case
in the same place as the FJ60? Does the exhaust route outside the frame
at all?"

So, what can I tell him? I'd answer the question BUT my truck is up at Rob Lassman's (Radd Cruisers) getting redone 1HZ et all.....

Help me out please.

Tom

the cross memeber is the same place unless Rob moved it.
the exhaust should be running down outside the frame since the exhust dump on the 1HZ dumps on the RH side (simular to 3B) thus it will need to go over the frame to clear the front driveshaft and to also not heat up the t/case from passing too close. you will need a custom set of sliders.
a least his what i am visualising in my head.

Tom, glad to hear you're considering *real* sliders, I'm in the same boat and working on a design.

Since you'll have to do a new exhaust for the 1HZ, why noy just mount the sliders first, then route the exhaust accordingly?

Well good idea, but Ill need an exhaust to get her home first. I have a friend who is local here who is a good fabricator. I may use him. He made all the cage work.

Curious Tom, you running 42TSLs and mini truck running gear?

Any birf problems and what do you figure your rig weighs in at?

I would like to see a BJ74 done out like that with a exo cage etc.

You figure it should run outside the frame rails?

I was thinking on coming down and under the bell housing and running it through the original route?

It may hang down a smiggin below the cross member(which is in the original location) but forward which shoud be of no clearance concerns.

hzj60 guy,

first off.......... stop posting pics of your sammi in the int'l cruiser forum! lol

on the exhaust, i put a custom 2 1/2" on my bj60 and ran it INSIDE the frame rail right to the fuel tank, then outside, like stock location.

nothing hangs below the frame front to back, i hit the frame and skid plate, nowhere near the pipe!

got it done on the island, at a local shop for about 600 cad, thats from the turbo to the rear bumper with a bung for a pyro. parts and labour.

not bad when you figure 1 mandrel bent "U" of 2 1/2" pipe goes for almost 100 cad around here.

i needed 2 "U's" and about 20' of 2 1/2' plus bending and welding and install.

all in all not a bad price for a complete exhaust. don't think i could have done it for much less, and no headaches.... just drop it off, then pick it up! sweet!

i bet RADD knows of a shop close to him, for about the same... if not better.

good luck

Rob, those are 38.5 SX's. The rear end is a V6 third member and a full foater with 4140 axles and disks. The front is a high pininon (FZJ80) third member with LongFields and 4340 axles.

The truck weighs 4100 lbs. Never had any issues with running gear. Im pretty light on the foot wheeling too.

It's 100 to 1 right now in low range.

Kirk, I did my last exhaust with mandrel bends and welded it together, nobody in this town does that type of bending.

Bob in Oregon had his custom bent up out of stainless, my dream exhaust system. He is lucky enough to know someone with a mandrel bender, sounds like a very well done system.

I must ask him if he went under the bell housing or on the outside of the frame.

Rob,
i have been looking at this route that you decribe for many years of having exhaust run. the Bseries and the HZ series makes for some real PITA routing of the exhaust.
are you planning of crossing before the bell housing right behind the oil pan? or bhind the bell housing in front of the tranny?
i don't think having it too close to the oil pan is a good idea, that is a minimum of 600F heat at highway speeds and 1000 F climbing hills... that would deffinately heat the oil in the pan.
if you go behind the bell housing then you have to stay low enough not to generate heat into the tranny... either case you will drop the ground clearence for sure... also then if that truck ever does see off road the exhaust will be the first thing to get ripped off.
over the frame rail and back then over the frame rail again is the way we have had to do it. for the sliders then you take 2 pieces of flat straight out from the frame about 4 1/2" parallel to the frame and then a verticle tying them together in a U shape. this will give you something to mount the sidebars to. i had to do this to my 97 HZJ75. this design also allows for protection for the exhaust.
this is all just early morning rambling.
cheers

Tom will do the final exhaust on his truck, we will have one put on at a muffler shop with lots of nice crimped corners.

Turbo to come and I think he would like stainless also.

I see your point on some of those issues, I have also seen the pipe wrapped and almost cool to the touch, another possibility.

In any event thanks for the idea sounds like a good possibility.

Wayne, did you stop in and see Bob Bs HZ 60? If so what did you think of his exhaust?

Rob

i never took a close look at Bob, Baron's exhaust but i did like the conversion. the engine could have sat higher by about 2" in my opinion, but all in all a very nice install, very clean.
pulls nice too.
cheers

you are right,

nobody has a mandrel bender on the island, you can buy 180* mandrel bent"U's" then cut and splice for desired effect.

you only need it for the really tight bends.

the hz has a passengers side exhaust drop right? like the 3b correct?

on my truck i ran the pipe from the engine bay on the inside of the frame rail, then between the transfer case and the frame and then crossover after the tcase. then pretty much stock routing all the way back.

the only major problem would be if hzjsamuraiposterguy's tcase has that vac. acc. thing for the 4H. if you had one of those i don't think you could make it fit on that side (passengers).

but, ..... wtf do i know?

We have the big vacume shifter du-hicky which would not allow us to run down that side.

He wants to eventually run 3 or 4 inch, with turbo.

There is a lowrider shop here in town that I heard just recently purchased a 3 inch madrel bender, cheaper unit that is 3 inch only.
