I'm currently in talks to purchase an HJ60, but i need to make sure it can be registered in my home state of California.

it's definitely old enough and it's originally a Canadian car, not japan import.

can anyone point me in the right direction?

thanks!!

based on conversations with RI's about registering a diesel LC in california it sounds like i won't be able to... if someone can prove me wrong, please do!!

thanks for those links! the issue is not necessarily the smog but the fact that it was originally an 'out of country vehicle'

from: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr9

What Do I Need for an Out-of-Country Vehicle?
For an out-of-country vehicle, first contact the following agencies for customs, safety, and emissions compliance requirements:

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
  • U.S. Department of Transportation.
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
  • California Air Resources Board.
If the vehicle is determined to be eligible for registration, documents from these agencies and normal nonresident requirements are required.

I should have said this before anything else.

Go to the nearest DMV office and ask them. You will get an official answer not a biased one or "what I think you should do" type of answer.

Tell them it's an import registered in AZ.
I still see no problem getting the car registered here in CA.

Look forward to reading your results.

Contact importavehicle.com in Ontario, CA they can help you avoid any potential headaches with CARB

thanks for that! that is the shop i actually talked to and they told me it could not be done. :(

edit: if anyone knows someone who knows their way about making something like this happen, please let me know!

For some reason I just don't want to accept that answer. I saw a bunch of imports registered in CA.
If the vehicle is over 25 years old, it should be eligible for importation from anywhere around the world. Obviously at the fed level the car has passed the requirement. All is left now is to have it registered in CA as a private transaction brought from a different state.
I bought 3 cars out of state (not imports) and the process was fairly simple and painless.

me neither! i'm just not in a position to take a ~$10k loss in the event things don't go our way. i'll keep y'all posted when i talk more with the DMV and possibly the C.ARB

It used to be possible to keep diesel imported vehicles here in CA but CARB has clamped down on that. As for petrol cars and trucks you can thank Mr. Schwarzenegger for trading the 25 year rule off to pass some other legislation, so now the 25 year emissions exemption does not apply in CA unless you want to spend $10k to get the car tested to meet that year's CA emissions standard.

There are tons of illegally imported and registered vehicles nation wide but the feds are finding them and seizing them so if you choose to do it the wrong way be very prepared to lose your vehicle.

About 4 years ago a friend of mine brought a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD (diesel) to CA from Canada. It is registered here in CA.
Those cars were never sold new in CA. This Jeep was sold new in Canada as a Canadian model.

When did the law change?

I was talking to my neighbor who seems to only own Diesel Land Cruisers and he said that it is no problem especially if you are just transferring it from another state.
You may want to pick his brain he is on Mud under In2cruisers.

Can I tell you how tough it is to live across the street from someone who has a different bad ass cruiser at least twice a year!

I think I was looking at the same Rig. For me, a big question is "Why hasn't the owner registered it in CA?" Did you ask? Have you looked at this LC? How bad was the rust?
