HJ60 24V Alternator (charging) issue

In my quest of a used alternator (which are quite expensive for unknown condition), I stumble on a guy which I bought 24v parts previously and asked him if he had a 24V alternator. Unfortunately no but hw told me that he could rebuild mine with some new and almost new parts. So I dropped it off on sunday and tuesday my alternator was rebuild and I picked it up this morning.

The cause: I've got some burnt diodes and a short on my stator. Maybe due to a 4 feet water crossing during the Yankee Toys Fall Gathering...

What he have done:
  • 2 new bearings
  • New stator
  • Replaced all diodes
  • All new hardware
  • New regulator cover
  • New connector
  • Sandblast and paint

All for a fraction of the cost of a used alternator!

Here's the pictures:

Nothing like finding a friend who knows what they're doing eh! Congrats!

hey Biche, i'm new to this site and a new owner of a 1987 HJ60. I seem to be having the same problem with my alternator. I'm in Montreal and wondering if you're willing to share contact info on the guy who rebuilt your alternator.

Where can one find or order parts for 24volt alternator with internal regulator. It goes on my 86 HJ60 everyday driver. It’s down until can get fixed. Please help!
Thanks,
Scott Norwood

No one stock the parts to rebuilt these, I was in luck finding someone that imported parts from Guatemala.

However, one guy locally claim he could rebuilt it as he rebuild a lot of 24V Industrial forklift alternator.

What’s your location? ! am here in Alabama and people look st me like ! am from mars when ! bring it in looking for a rebuild.. Would you have any numbers or contact information?

I'm in Montreal, Canada. I went to a few "auto electric" shops (specialist of anything electric on cars) and they do not have any parts listed. If it wasn't for the vacuum pump within the alternator, sourcing an replacement alternator would be easier.

You may also want to look at small tractor or small machinery dealers (like Kubota) that may have something useful.

Hey Biche
My local alternator shop did a rebuild for me a few years ago . Good local family company . You still got your old alternator . Want me to ask for a quote?
I am in Kingston On . About 4-5 hours west of you .

Thanks Gentlemen,
Beno, hooked me up once again. For those who live in the USA Bob at Turbo Diesel and Electric Motors in Ga. hooked me up with all parts I needed to do a rebuild on my alternator. I have been back on the road now for about a month, everything running great and alternator putting out at 28volts. Thanks Beno for getting my HJ60 back on the road you Rock!!

Thanks, but I sold the truck 3 years ago! If I ever buy another 24V truck, this may become useful.

Good day, I have strange readings from alternator.
AVR is external, excite till 27,5 volts, after when rpm increases volts increas also till 33 and may be more.
Strange is that if I measure AC volts I have 45 -71 ac voltage!!!!
I have try charge battery but volts drops less than 24,8.
Generator with pump, I can't open to see rotor damaged or not.
Also I try other voltage regulator, with him genny gives only 14 - 16 volts.
Please help me!!! What should I do.
Brushes are good, regulator only cover rusty, from inside is also good, contacts cleaned don't help.

Change alternator or let a shop test it?
I have a spare but to far away, maybe search for a local landcruiser owner for other testing?
