Hj47 troopy re igniting the spark (60 into 47 troopy) power steering conversion

Hey guys i have a love affair with my troopy it was my first 4wd but as such it has died of the cancer i have more than enough parts to get her going again but id like to make it alittle more special than standard. Like every one now days my minister for finance wont allow to big a spend as troopy’s in oz are common and cheap so i wouldn’t wanna blow all my money on a car worth 2 to 3 grand.

Question: how much can is pen on the old girl with out over capitalising?
The major mods will be
60 power steering
60 springs and diffs
Ford 6 cyl OHC
Can’t decide ford auto or 60 5 speed ?

Hey man, very nice troopy. Same colour as mine. And like you, I have a love affair with mine :).

Where abouts are you located?

Sweet action on that trailer too .... looking very fine indeed.

My personal opinion is that you should go for a 5 speed. I put a 5 speed from an HJ75 in my troopy and haven't looked back since. Its the way to go. Drops the revs nicely and makes cruising at 100-110 very smooth. An auto in a 40 series is just all types of wrong in my book. But that's just my opinion.

So are you going for a ford cross flow? They're good engines, and its a conversion that has been done many a time in oz. But I'm very fond of the 2H diesel .... extremely tough. bulletproof. Reliable as all hell. Just needs a turbo to hold gear up hill.

60 series power steering is pretty cheap ... especially here in oz. Parts are plentiful. Relatively minor modding is required, from what I understand - you'll need to move your shock tower to fit the steering box. And an HJ60 power steering pump should bolt straight up to you 2H.

60 series springs are a different matter - they are longer from what I understand and therefore that requires moving your spring perches - so once again its minimal cost, but will take a fair bit of time and fabrication.

There's so much wealth of knowledge on this site, so whatever path you choose, support will be readily available. If its been done to a cruiser before, someone here will know all the ins and outs about it.

Good luck with it all mate!

Cheers,

Matt

Also - you should stick a post in the FJ45 section on this site - dedicated bunch in there...

dingbatt: thanks mate im in Bundaberg the tuck has dun lots of beach work and i alwase thought an auto would be grate cause you would never loos traction but i have 60 with the 5 speed and its a brilliant box so im undecided on the gearbox

ill be going to be a over head cam efi 6 its pretty much the same block as the old xflow so should be pretty strait forward and the 2h is a brilliant motor in my opinion i have had a few now and i could go that way but i want this truck to be fun and the falcon 6 has double the hp and torque of the 2h even with the turbo

ive used this site a few time and every thing i know about cruisers i learned from the guys on here

Have an HJ47 ute I'm getting pretty serious about, also in Australia.

Spent nothing on it in the year I've had it, but now that the bond is firmly established I will be spending 3-5K on it over the next year on improvements. Personally I think you should spend as much as necessary to get the car you want and can afford. If you spend 10grand total and end up with something as functional as a newer 75 series, then your not behind in anyone's book as far as I can see. Plus you have a car with character.

Just quietly I'm not sure how much longer they will be common and cheap in Australia- especially the diesels that we so love. Sure there are still a lot around, but getting pretty rare in original, reasonable condition isn't easy.

spacemonkey: thanks for the encouraging words looks like we have the nod from the wife so the shazy will be off to the sand blaster in the next few weeks

Good work Steve.

Can't wait to see the 40 series reborn. I'm a big fan of the 60 series 5 speed, and I think a 2H with a turbo would be my pick!

Happy to help fitting the Ford motor if that's the way you go!

jerrah the ford motor is locked in its the only thing i think i know for sure and you help will be greatly appreciated i been thinking about it and you should get a 40 dont bother with 60's and 80'. 40's are the only way to go

hopefully by Wednesday the 60's power steering will be in and ill have some photos. fingers crossed it all goes well

I don't know Steve, I'm pretty fond of 60's and the 80's are supposed to be less prone to rust.

How did you go with fitting 60 springs on the 40 chassis?

got the cut out for the steering arm don this morning hunting around for some crush tubs hope its in by at least the weekend fingers crossed

this is how i got it sitting so far. i know i gotta take more out of the shocky tower but dos this look alright to you guys ?
