Hitting hard on the way back through reverse

I recently picked up an 89' FJ-62 with 180,000 miles. The transmission shifts smooth while driving. When I am bringing the shifting lever from drive back into park the transmission hits hard as it passes through reverse. The ATF is at the correct levels but I havent changed it since I bought the vehicle 2 months ago. Its been about a year since the previous owner had changed the ATF. Any suggestions?

Look for Slop in the Drive line - 3rd member, Driveshaft, and t-case.. If you have a bunch of slop from something thats worn out it could do that!

Use the search button and type in "McNamara" which is sold by Rodney. I have the same clunk going from park to drive and park to reverse. Aparently the splines are worn on the output shaft. From what I've priced out you can get a McNamara shaft for $400 and another $400 worth of seals and parts to fix it. Looks like you can open the back of the transfercase and put it in through there without dropping the trany or tcase. I'm still ready up on this so don't take my word for fact.

I'd be willing to bet that the output shaft at the back of your tranny looks something like this:

That's what mine looked like at about 150,000 miles. Bad clunk!

It's not a shaft that you get from McNamara, it's a new input gear for the transfer case. I've installed probably 5-6 of them now. Here's what it looks like, next to the OEM gear and PTO gear:

The back half of the transfer case has to come off to swap it out. Then you'll find all sorts of bearings and seals to replace "while I'm in there".
