I'm in

I am interested and was talking to to edog's 80 about a group buy. By the sounds of it from the posts in this thread a year ago, we may not have to actually do a "group buy." It sounds like he was honoring the discount for a single buyer when mentioning the MUD forum. I'll contact him and see if there's still a single buyer discount, etc.

I emailed him and will post the details of his reply as soon as I get it. Maybe we won't have to organize a group buy after all.

Ok,

He got back to me and had some bad news about these bulbs. Toshiba HIRs have been discontinued and are in short supply. This is why we don't see the ebay auctions. He still has quite a few to sell for the time being, but they are full price... no deals anymore by the sounds of it. He mentioned that certain Nissan Maximas use them as standard equipment, so I hopped on over to the maxima forums and did some digging.

The 2nd generation HIRs have indeed been discontinued by Toshiba, but very recently Phillips released a 3rd generation HIR bulb. A poster on the maxima forum provided this link: <font color="red">NEW Philips 3rd Generation 9012 (HIR2)</font> as a place to buy 3rd generation HIRs. They are a little bit more expensive and I have no idea about the seller.

The 3rd generation has a rated lifespan of 1400 hours compared to 800 hours for the 2nd generation, but other than that they seem to have very similar specs. I will be ordering a set of highs and lows through the finemotoring.com seller since this forum has a bit of a relationship with that seller. If someone else would like to be the guinea pig and try the 3rd gens, please post your experience.

Hmm, good to know. Thanks for the legwork.

the new phillips bulbs can be purchased here:

9011 Toshiba High beams:
http://store.candlepower.com/9011.html
from my research these are the best solution for the high beams available

9012 Phillips low beam new bulbs:
http://store.candlepower.com/ph3rdge90h.html

I just purchased them and am waiting for shipment. I plan to do a writeup on the install as there is a little trimming on the bulb seat that has to be done. I spoke with Daniel Stern whom is an expert on all lighting, he has helped me in the past with improving the lighting on my fj40 and knows his s***. He has said that the phillips new bulb is a good improvement over the toshiba.

how are these different to the bulbs Slee sells?

Below are the responses on the IPF bulbs from Daniel Stern, seems like the IPF are not much brighter in my opinion, so I am looking for something better:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I installed the ipf low beams and was not that impressed really, are
these the best bulbs for my application?

Not by a long shot. If you can wait a few weeks, there'll be an all-new Philips HIR2 bulb much better than the previous Toshiba product. GE devised the technology some years back, but their bulb design was poor -- very mechanically fragile and had poor filament geometry. Then Toshiba had a whack at it. Their bulb didn't have the mechanical issues of the GE product, and they produced a good amount of light, but the filament luminance wasn't so great. Filament placement accuracy in the Toshiba product was certainly precise enough optically, but the geometry of the filament, particularly in the low beam 9012 bulb, was not optimal. The 9011 high beam was better on this front and I really can't think of any major objections to the HIR1/9011 Toshiba high beam bulb.

and some info on real % numbers:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will check back in a few weeks to see if the 9012's are in. So I
want the 9011's for high beam and 9012's for low beam, correct? These
together sounds like they will upgrade my stock 1996 fzj80 lighting
quite a bit.

Yes and yes.

Low beam stock: 9006, 12.8V, 55W, 1000 lumens, 875 hours
Low beam compare: 9006+50, 12.8V, 55W, 1090 lumens, 300 hours Low beam compare: 9006+80, 12.8V, 55W, 1120 lumens, 275 hours
Low beam new: HIR2, 12.8V, 55W, 1875 lumens, 875 hours

High beam stock: 9005, 12.8V, 65W, 1700 lumens, 320 hours
High beam compare: 9005+50, 12.8V, 55W, 1830 lumens, 175 hours High beam new: HIR1, 12.8V, 65W, 2530 lumens, 320 hours

So, compared to standard bulbs, you're looking at 88 percent more light
from the low beams and a grand total of 137% more light in high beam mode
(49% of which from the high beam units, 88% of which from the low beams).
The beam pattern will not change, but there will be considerably more
light within the beam pattern.

thats good to know. Thanks.

Just installed the Phillips 9012s in my 100, replacing the Toshibas. They are slightly nicer, better pattern, better actual real world illumination. The Toshibas will be my backup.

I had a Toshiba 9011 high beam bulb burn out recently so I replaced it with the OEM halogen bulb. The OEM halogen looks significantly brighter.

well, not sure but they showed a xenon sticker on them......

I now have the HID bulbs shown above in my fj80 and am very happy with them, much brighter, the new phillips ones are great.

NOah

I assume you mean HIR, right?
