High speed winch

Hi Guys, I want to biuld a high speed winch, anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I know that the US team who won the Morrocan Outback Challenge had a faster winch - any idea what they did?
 
I did see a thread somewhere on the net all about this by some guys heavily involved in oz style winching comps.
They had detailed info on ft/per second improvements. It may have been in one of the local magazines,probably 4wd Monthly.
Ill keep thinking about it:D
Maybe post the question in the hardcore section of the 4WD Monthly forum;)
 
you are going to be hard pressed to find any winch faster than a 12V 8274 running on 24V...
VERY FAST and VERY powerful and reliable to boot...
 
I am sure it would be faster, but not sure how how it is good for. I dont think warn would recommedn runnign a 12v on 24v - otherwiase they would say "Run the 12V on 24V for faster winch ops!"

I have seen some threads about milemarker hydraulics that have been re valved for some really high speeds
I know, ...speed and milemarker in the same sentence
I think it was on here?
what about the dual motor 8274's that have been mentioned on here, could you do that with a 24v one?

most guys here run 2 alternators and 4 batteries, 24v with 12v winch motors, because they are faster running on 24v under load, but they fry everything when they cook.

its virtually winch racing here in some comps now.

i and a couple others have been doing this for over 2 years of long hard pulls, short hard pulls with no ill side effects...
but if you wanted a "by the book" answer you should have said so at the outset. i don't play by the rules.
 
2 years is some good test time. Mine is a 12V system though - so not much help for me:)
 
now lets see it work with a real load on it... free rolling truck on a cement base is nothing compared to 4500 lbs buried up to the axles in clay...

i am sure you will see this in action sometime after i move down there...you pick the nastiest trail you know and have driven and lets go for a putz...
 
Sounds good, we are scoping out a new trail up in quebec shortly, will post pics and video - nothing like your fun stuff out west I am sure.
 
a 150 foot hill is 150 ft hill at 3500 ft or at 350 ft sea level... you roll and you will be hurt. mud and water over the hood sucks at 3500 ft or at 350 ft...
side hilling at 35 degrees will cause your nuts to scramble for safety at either elevation...

if you can pick a trail out here then you will be good down there and vise versa. if you can't then you will be stuck or broke at either place...

anyway wheeling is to be fun, good natured competition is fun... serious attitude isn't... that is the problem with running with certain groups, the testosterone gets tiring real fast...
 
Most of the problem here is that you have to drive a long way between good offroading spots - a pain in the ass.
 
humm, a diesel van and a flat bed makes that much easier...

realisticly, for me my off roading is 3000km away and involves a plane flight so my weekend of off roading will be $2000 plus broken parts...
 
What modifications have to be made to make a Milemarker work that quickly? I know speed is one thing, but to get this speed is line pull sacraficed?

I think that the main thing was higher capacity valving, and higher flow pumps, and I don't think that power was sacrificed.
there was another more in depth article about tuning a milemarker for higher speeds, i'll try to round it up later, might have been from birfield not 'mud??
