Hi everyone, I just picked up an 03 LX470 and drove it 10 hrs home on the interstate. Around the last couple hours of my journey I had unusually high RPM's, almost as though it wasn't finding that last gear to shift to. At 70mph I was at about 3800 rpm, but the strange thing was my engine temp was normal and I was getting about 18mpg according to the computer (which I know isn't always correct but I at least didn't see any drop off after the rpm issue). Keep in mind this is with the newer transmission and I had the shifter to the right in "D", not to the left in "4". Today I got up and checked the transmission fluid after a short drive around town and it was in range on the dipstick and it was transparent and red, not muddy or brown like some old or burnt transmission fluid. I drove into work and at 70mph the RPM's were about 2500 so everything seems normal. Does anybody have an idea what may have caused my issues with the high RPM's?

Ugh, so things got worse. Not sure if this has anything to do with the rpm’s or not but I pulled in the driveway this afternoon to the sweet smell of antifreeze. Engine temp was normal so that’s good. Got home just in time. Got out of the truck and there’s antifreeze dripping on the driveway from the radiator area. Ugh. Glad I got it home at least and wasn’t stranded. Got it to the shop. More news to follow.

I should introduce my new rig in the “new members” section but I did that a while back with my previous lx470. Unfortunately that one got totaled in a nasty hailstorm. Here is my new one. Bad cooling system, high rpm’s and all!

That paint job positively glows!

Thanks! Yeah it may prove to have some issues, but given the fact I live in the Midwest-being able to find a 20 year old vehicle with very minor surface rust on the frame and none that I can find on the body - I at least feel like I have a good foundation to work with. I’m pretty excited. I’m sure it’s just the water pump, which looks like it needs to be replaced. We expect these things when we decide to be the care-takers of 20 year old daily driver/real world vehicles!

I realized it doesn’t have the spare tire tool kit in it. It has the bottle jack, but not the tire iron or the connectors to lower the spare tire. Does anyone have a fix for this? I don’t really care if I have an actual 03 lx470 tool kit, just want to be able to drop the spare if necessary.

It’s at the shop still. They couldn’t get a radiator til Tuesday. Everything is so backed up these days.
Any thoughts on where I can source the factory tool kit?
