I went to the muffler shop to get an estimate on getting the muffler and tailpipe replaced. Asked about a high-flow cat, and he told me they're all the same--a cat's a cat. No such thing as a high-flow cat--false advertising. So, first question, is that true, or do some of you have high flow cats that did make a difference?

Second question: Which muffler do I go with--Flowmaster, Magnaflow, or something else? This is for an '87 with a desmogged 2F.

Thanks for advice!

They do make high flow CAT's call like (www.discountconverter.com). I think they told me they have high flow CAT's but they it doesn't have a hole for the thermal sensor.

I went with a magnaflow and like it. I was told the flowmaster would be loud in the cab.

Iam very happy with my magnaflows. I have had Flow master before on my last truck, they were a bit loud thru the cab. Had trouble carring on a conversation. (My truck is a DD. )

Real happy with the cat I got from all-catalytic-convertors.com - $179 & a direct bolt-in with all the stuff for my '83 FJ60. Passed emissions with a bottle of Berryman's secret liquid.

But why do you want a cat if you've de-smogged it? Only going to clog up again without all the weird stuff you've taken off the engine. You just need a "test pipe", or the entire exhaust from the head pipe back replaced & a new high-flow muffler added.

I was wondering about this myself.... Does the high flow cat make any difference in power or response?

Have an 88-FJ62 w/ 180K and added in April 04 the following:

Dual new free-flow cats (From CATCO)
New 2.25" pipe from cats to tail
New Flowmaster

My truck felt totally new afterwards. Did not do a dyno, but clearly sizeable hp and torque gains, plus slightly better mpg (about 1mpg).

As far as the sound, it is 10% - 15% louder than the stock, but nothing even close to say having glass paks. Its actually no louder than my neighbors new Escalade.

on my fj62 with 3fe, i was running exhaust manifold(which off the block has 2 different halves, but both on drivers side, each half had either first three or second three cylinders running into it) then running into the two stock pipes, but i removed the cats and bolted instead to two, 2" pipes which ran parallel into the dual in dual out v8(i forget which series num. i think that was the series 40) Flowmaster muffler. coming out were 2, 2" pipes going to each rear corner of the cruiser. then to 2.5" tips out each corner. made the pickup a little better, but IMHO i was needing the v6 model Flowmaster. the v8 series was a little too free flowing especially since i had no cats. it probably would ran better with the v6 series also. But sounded good. My dogs always new when i was coming home, but it never got to noisy or obnoxious unless i romped on the gas and held it high. but removing the cats allowed for more air flow which was needed, or atleast i thought it was b/c i had a snorkel and k&n which together allowed for more air intake requiring more air outpush or less restriction thru the exhuast so they would be closer together, though with the v8 series Flowmaster, i feel was too much non-restriction for my set up. but it all depends on what you are running and what you are wanting performance wise and sound/ appearence wise. also might depend on your state's emission laws. but going no cats and flowmaster "dual in dual out"(would deff. go with this setup on whatever brand o muffler you choose) with the V6 series they have, would be my ideal setup. also heard that cobra exhuasts were good, but that was a few years back
