High Beam Lights FIXED!! Finally! (1 Viewer)

The hardest part about fixing this issue was getting the steering column cover to line back up and reattach. There was also great trepidation for that old plastic in Arizona weather cracking when I put the screws back in. My wife repaired the plastic when I took it off, and everything held, I have all the lights I'm supposed to have, now I just need to figure out why my door locks don't work (yes, I checked the circuit breaker under the dash), and maybe replace a window motor, because of how slow and sad it runs. Thanks for the breakdown. Wish I had scrolled a little further for the pictures someone else posted.

Another successful high beam fix with this approach this morning. Had to re-solder one of the red wires on the bottom of the switch assembly in addition to the contact cleaning but everything is working as it should now. Great step by step write up of the process.

Fixed my "No High Beam" issue this morning using this thread. Works great now. Some PO had been in there before and jury rigged the red w/yellow stripe and red w/green stripe wires for some reason. I removed the BS wiring and re-soldered the wires back with nice shiny solder joints. Bonus: got to reposition the steering wheel straight. Horn still ain't working even with a fresh empty .22 brass around it.

Yup, second time I have done this and did the trick.

Thanks!

Bumping this thread, as it seems to do the trick... Took my combo switch apart following the excellent instructions from @screwbird (post #1 in this thread), and great photos from @Turkeypen (posts #5 & #7), sanded up all the contacts and seems to be much better. Haven't tried it on a longer test drive, but will soon, and will update if anything goes awry.

Previous situation: When I'd be on a long highway drive, going back and forth from high- to low-beams, eventually the high-beams would start to flicker and then fade. Still had the low-beams thank goodness, and could get the high-beams to come on fine, briefly, using the "pull" back for "flash", but couldn't get them to stay on in the "push" direction without fading, especially in high-humidity or heavy rain. Next time I'd drive, it would be fine again for a while then do the same thing.

I did notice some pitting and burning on the contacts, so I'm hoping it was build-up. Not sure why it would get better between drives, but glad that this seems to have been at least a good part of the problem, and hopefully all of the problem. Definitely saved trying to locate and pay a lot for a new combo switch.

I was chasing ghosts when my high beams died 2 days after installing the Torfab LED kit on my 1987 FJ62. Thought I managed to break something with the install or with the splicing in of the resistor to make the high beam indicator in the dash work. Turned out the switch just needed some TLC as per this thread. Thanks so much!

Also a big shout out to the guys at Torfab for very responsive assistance over email in trying to resolve the issue and also for an AWESOME set of lights.

Hey folks! New here and just brought home my '89 FJ62 this past weekend. I'm chasing this problem and was wondering if anyone had pictures of where to find the black connectors in this step? Is it towards the steering column or deeper down? Working on the garage beer fridge once I baseline my FJ. Thanks all!

9. Disconnect the 2 smaller black connectors from the large blue terminal block and take the entire assembly over to a well lit workbench - preferably in close proximity to your garage beer fridge.
