edit, not relay- high and low work, just no high flash....look for a mechanical issue...

Lambcrusher thanks for the input, will have to get to the relay later today; :hmm:the detent seems to be lined up well 'cause no problems now shifting from high to low + turn signals are fine and on high beam the blue dash light is on; only when pulling back on the lever to activate the flasher does the blue dash light comes on BUT no activation of headlight high:confused:

oops; just got your edit  damn, this is a puzzle cause the high beams come on w/o problems; so am thinking:hmm: probably not a ground issue cause highs do come on when moving the lever forwards soooo:hmm: maybe no contact when pulling back although there is power to the dash "blue" light, how do I explain that puzzle:confused:

what a great tip!

FWIW, I play around with vintage hi-fi stuff from the 1960-70's, often when I get a piece, there are issues(scratchy sound, sound only out one side), most the time all that it takes to get them up and running again is cleaning the contacts and pots with some Deoxit......most often a squirt or two and move the controls back and forth a dozen times and bingo..back working.

It would be a good product to use along with that your doing.

My headlights highbeams turn on when you pull back on the leaver. Sometimes when you push it forward there is a delay all the lights go out and then the high beams. Most of the time the high beams never come on unless you pull the leaver back.

After reading this post seems like contacts.

Landpimp and crusher thanks again; you are i think very right, the problem seems to be a :hmm: lack of continuity on the plunger contact:idea:; the one that closes the circuit when pulling back on the lever to flash, will have to take her apart again this weekend, the housing is cracked and threads are stripped but mel lowe is sending me a good one:bounce: thanks Mel:beer:

when mine did that, it was a burnt contact on the 9 pin connector under the column... I use the factory lighting circuit to operate my new lighting harness. I like to see at night. Also check the grounding contacts at the big ground junction above the column, under the dash...

Hi people, my problem in my '89 HJ61 is all the lights are on now.

Prior to the combo switch clean none of my lights worked at all and there was a buzzing from the relays when I pulled the lever back towards me (as in flashing my lights)

Following the combo clean as per this great thread
When I:
Switch to Park light - only park lights :)
Switch to Low Beam - both low and high and high indicator light :(
Switch to High Beam - both low and high and high indicator light :(

Im wondering if I need to replace the combo switch?

Thanks in advance.

Have your lights been changed at all? Only reason I ask is I purchased a headlight loom which chucks in some relays and uses a direct feed from the battery, I was having the drama that when on low beam I had both low and high. The problem was that along the line somewhere someone had changed the wiring to suit different headlights. Once I put it all back to factory all worked well again, might be something to have a look at.

Iam now getting a relay buzz also as I have correct wiring but incorrect headlights (which I have ordered some replacements, eg the H4 upgrade type off ebay), this is most likely feedback from the incorrect lights

Thanks for the reply.
I replaced some lights a couple of years ago. I also fitted a LED light bar a couple of months ago. Ive never done any upgrades to the original lights though, just replace with same.
Everything was working until last week. Saying that - fine when I tested it. The car doesnt get much use and rarely at night.
The Light bar ran off a relay I had previously wired up for another set of spotties. Ive disconnected this light bar while troubleshooting the current problem.

Mine do this exact same thing! Do me a favor, post up your fix when you do it so I can attack mine in the same way. Right now I have got bigger fish to fry (transfer case rebuild).

OK. I'm stumped. I've read this thread several times and cleaned all of the contacts with a small file down to metal. I've tested the wires going to all of the headlights on an 88' FJ62. I have 12 volts going to all 4 lights.
What happens is I turn on the lights and I have no Low Beams. Hi Beams work as they should. All four lights come on. I can push to Hi Beams and I can pull for the passing hi beam. When I switch to Low Beam, there are no lights and the Hi indicator light on the dash comes on bright. The grounds under the dash seem to be attached just fine. Any help is super appreciated.
I used this thread once before to fix this issue and about 1 year later it happened again. I tried the same fix but nothing worked. I replaced the switch with a different one and I still have the same issue. I checked the fuses and replaced one of the low beam lights yesterday and still no LO Beams.

Thread deserves a bump. Great write up for a common problem. Another happy customer!

Did you ever figure this problem out? I am having the exact same problem with no lo beams but hi beams work fine. Any solutions you have found would be very helpful.

This thread is fantastic! Thank you so much to the original poster for the very clear write up. No pics were needed for me. When I got the plastic cover off of the block with the red wires (step 11), I found one of the soldered connections had popped loose you can see it in the photo. I resoldered the loose connection and and cleaned all the other connections points as recommended. Took the good advice to fix the horn at the same time (classic worn-pin vs fresh-pin pic included) Thanks to all contributors!

Would a haywire left blinker be affected in this switch? Much of the time it blinks double time but in a turn or at the next light it will blink normal. Bulb was switched out ages ago and it seemed to work but then went to the pattern written. My right blinker is always normal pattern. High and low headlights a-okay too.
