Is there a recommended good spot for hiding a key, and a method for hiding it?

Today I accidentally hit lock when i meant unlock with the car running in front of my house, when i wanted to unload somethings.... good thing I was in front of my house, where I had another key handy...

I'd like to put one on the car somewhere, stuck to the frame or someplace..

looking for suggestions..

Not sure that I should post this in a public place, but since I trust ya'll...I have a hide-a-key on the top of the frame rail, right behind the steering gearbox. Drivers side is convenient, and it's never fallen off there. It's pretty invisable, unless you know it's there.

I have this on both cruisers. Showed my wife where it was on hers. Ya, ya, ya she says. Then a few months later I got a call..."so where did you say you put that spare key..."

Hide-a-key = priceless!

Hey, while you're at it, post your ATM pin code and IH8MUD password, you can trust me!

duct taped to the frame and undercoat over it. works great...i didn't find the one on my old chevy until i parted it out.

I dont, I just carry 2 sets of keys. but behind the lic plate is a good spot and not hard to get to........

roof racks are good, paint the key black and stick on with 2 sided tape

I got mine somewhere on the frame, bolted in with a wingnut. It's been on there for years and survived long trips on dirt roads, and I've used it a couple of times over the years.

so what's your address doug? :D

didn't i read in another thread that there were only 30 or so keys made for the cruisers through '90? i think one guy said the same key worked for both his '87 and '88.

i've been thinking about doing the hide-a-key thing myself (i like lovetoski's idea) but with so few keys out there now maybe if i get locked-out i'll just call another owner ;)

i've heard people have good luck with wrapping the key in duct tape- make a good thick wad, then put some sticky gunk on it (contact cement, for example) and stuff the whole thing up into the frame somewhere. Spray it down with some 90wt.... and you have what looks like a grimy ball of tape. Someone would have to be pretty sure it was a key in order to go through the hassle of getting 90wt on their hands, then unwrapping a mess of duct tape.
Of course, it would be a hassle to get the key yourself when you need it, but you shouldn't be using it very often, right?
Oh, and the 90wt helps keep the ducttape wad from trapping water on the frame.
Haven't done this yet- our truck was stolen thanks to a spare key. I think we'll never have one on the rig again.

My spare key is .... in my wallet. Safer than on the truck and it should be with you all the time.
Having said that, I had my first experience retrieving keys locked in someone elses car and I was in the car in 10 seconds!!! I've NEVER "broken into" a car before. I don't feel quite so secure with the car simply locked anymore!

Inside the rear bumper ledge...

was where the PO of my '62 kept his hide-a-key from since the rig was new. Figured I'd leave it there since it handn't fallen out in 15 years.

yup :( I can get into most of mine using keys from others, can start a few of em as well.

when I 1st looked at my mustard 40 I was already in it when the PO showed up.......he had locked it ;)

I keep loosing hidakeys bouncing down the not roads of the west. I found a place under the body to bolt a piece of PVC with screw on caps. It is painted to match the truck and has mud and funk for extra camo. I have not lost a key in two years, it also holds wallet and stuff when back packing. Gumby has the same alarm and theft deterent we do LARGE HUNGRY DOGS.

father-in-law has one on his dash, think its only a good spot with fords, though, if it gets stolen who cares? :D

wallet works for me too...

on the large hungry dog note: a surfer buddy down here, when asked about where he stashes his keys while surfing, laughed and nodded towards his great dane/rottwieler mix's collar. Seems like a pretty safe place to me!

Behind the rear black air louvre thingy. No one would ever look there and it only takes a screwdriver to get to it--or a knife blade! :D
