Ok. From a stop truck hesitates when hitting the acclerator then we hear a bang as it shifts into gear. It is like you are in neutral and rev the engine and put it I gear. Has anyone else had a similar issue and what should we check?

Drive shaft clunk and the OP's description sound completely different to me.

What year is your truck?

There was one user here a while back who (going from memory here) had issues off the line, but it correlated heavily with how hard the stop was. In his case it was due to low trans fluid. The fluid was sloshing forward and away from the inlet when stopping and then it took a bit to get things going again after start. Checking the trans fluid quantity (and quality) may be a good starting point for you. Remember to check the level with the trans warm and while the engine is running.

Fluid is red and does not smell burnt. Drove truck for 25 minutes various speed. I checked the fluid and it is only at the cold mark. How much to add? Hestitation happened again from a second stop after initial start. Truck was still cold. Any recommendations?

Fill to high hot mark (at normal operating temp) sounds like about 1 qt low. Make sure to shift through each gear before checking, while engine idles. Best not to under or overfill. You may have a leak or it was not filled properly on last flush. I'd flush with 12 qt. Mobil 1 synthetic ATF (14 qt. with waste), if slippage stops after topping off and no leaks.

Last question, Called 2 lexus dealers about buying a quart of Trans oil. One recommends Dextron III the other swears it was changed to Toyota type Iv or Dextron IV. A little confused on what to add in the trans. Still not sure what to use after reading all the trans posts.

So I had an incident on the trail, lost a transmission cooler line, and had the exact symptoms you are reporting from low fluid. Getting fluid back to spec solved all my issues. I had the dealer do a drain and fill for about $140 so I was sure to have the proper amount. I have an '06 with the A750 which uses the red WS fluid.

On my 2000 I used Amsoil ATF. AFAIK, Type IV and WS are for later years (03+).

As a complete side note, I've been watching temps via Torque App and the highest temps I see are when coasting down a hill. Reason? I believe this is because the trans pump is fed by the input shaft. When the engine goes to idle the flow is reduced yet the transmission bits are still hot. Increased contact duration = higher output temp. It's odd to see a temp increase on the back side of a hill.

Experiencing a hesitation when shifting to overdrive. Need to let up on gas pedal then the truck shifts, speed is between 55 and 65 mph and rpm is a tad over 3000. Does anyone have any ideas on what to check?
