A friend of mine is in the process of picking up parts for hydro assist on his 40. He is goin with a 2x8x1.125 ram. THe end of this ram is a clevis type, not a Rod End Swivel Ball. His will look like this:

Since it has clevis ends, I need to get two 1" rod end swivel balls (I might not be naming them correctly) and need to find someplace online to get them. Anyone know a good place?
They look like this: (sorry about the pic)

this one is similiar but wouldn't the mounting points need to move around a bit. Rock stomper only has solid mounting points for this type of ram. 2x8 Hydraulic assist kit

I was thinking a pillow block welded to the axle and then some sort of removable/adjustable mount for the other pillow block on the tie rod.

Pillow blocks are not designed for those forces..

I think your 8" throw is too long.

I think 7" is closer to what you would need.

Have your "Friend" go to Tractor Supply Company in Tulare and look at thier selection of Hydraulic rams. They have the tractor style like the one pictured as well as the ones with the "Eyes" in both ends of them.

So for the type of cylinder he bought, just a solid pice of 1" with a 1" hole in it is sufficient? How would the tie rod's need to to rotate be taken into account with the axle moving up and down?
What is the best way to mount this type of hydro ram?

His will be basically this set-up.

It looks like it can be mounted one end on the wheel turning stop and the other end with he 1" block weled to some sort of tie rod removable mount.

He is my neighbor. A 75 year old man that thinks the internet is some new fangld doo-hickey. I said I would help figure out how to install it. He does not have high steer nor a major lift. His mind s set on this even thoguht he probably doesn't need it. He just liks to tinker with his rig. Gives him something to do and I am not one to get in the way of another man's obsession.

You need two of the mounts. One for the axle side, and one for the Tie rod.

mount the ram inline with the Tie rod.

Those clevis mounts are much more difficult to deal with than a mount with a Rod end on it..

a 2x8" ram is going to be a major issue in a stock mounting fashion.. It is just too big..

You have to scroll by this one to see the off-road-only super-power kit they offer.

Rockstomper Ram Assist Steering
More power from your power steering.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
This product DOES NOT come with a diagram of where to drill and tap your power steering gearbox.
This product DOES NOT come with instructions.
This product requires additional modifications which may require professional assistance.
Please read additional notes and information on this page.

We offer two varieties of our ram assist kits.

Our most popular ram assist kit uses a 1.5" bore cylinder. This provides significantly increased power to turn larger tires, especially off road and while working against a front locker.

This kit is recommended for the four-wheeler who needs additional power but prefers to keep the steering system fairly responsive for street driving.

Includes:
One 1.5" bore specially modified welded cylinder
Two 1/4" industrial hydraulic hoses
Four weld-on mounting tabs
Two mounting bolts with Nylock nuts
Assorted fittings for connecting the lines to the cylinder and steering box
$225 plus shipping.

the 1.5 would be a much better idea..

It is only 135 for everything from the surplus center except for the 1/4" monting brackets and 2 1" bolts.

I printed out everything for him so he can order the old fashion way, over the phone or by mail. IF it turns out to work for him, I'll probably do the same on mine before the summer is out.

He won't like a 2" ram on stock steering/pump.

It will be slow at lower RPM's. (meaning when he tries to turn the wheel at a stoplight, he will feel resistance for a sec)
8" throw is too long.. You have a plan on limiting the steering or mashing the steering stops?
If you do it, put the TR mount on one end of the TR or the other. Not in the middle of the TR. IT will bend if you put it in the middle.

Better to do it right the first time.

Here is everything a person needs to hook up Hydro Assist in thier rig. Only thing missing is2 bolts and 4 pieces of 1/4" cut into gussets with a 1" hole in each.

It's best to measure and figure out exactly what is needed..

All the "Kits" Suggest that 6" is the correct length for a Toyota Axle with Typical Hi Steer Arms

Its possible to Tear down the ram and add Spacers to limit the travel of an 8"

i was thinking about this sucker, but id rather have good Quality Rod ends, these look Cheep Burden Sales Surplus Center Item Detail

Or just getting a kit

I measured mine the way the guy from PSC told me to and and it is 7 1/4" on my FJ 60 front axle.

I do have the 4x4 labs highsteer/rear steer setup which adds to the distance between the axle housing and the tie rod though.
