Just replaced dizzy cap, spark plug wires, rotor, fuel filter and air filter in my FJ60.

It was running absolutely perfect for about 2 days.

This morning, I 'burned out' (I know stupid)....now it will not idle whatsoever below 1,000RPM. Fine at about 1,000RPM or above, nominal oil press. (55/60PSI)

At about 500RPM, oil press shoots to 20/30PSI, and there is a horrible knocking sound from the engine...

Coolant temp./level is fine

Please help....

Thanks,
jake

The knocking is what really worries me. Honestly, don't remember what RPMs I was turning for the burn out...was screetching pretty good though, just finished up the practice ceremony for my high school graduation!

Really hope that it isn't a bearing...

I'm not sure I understand... If you have it above 1000 rpm, it will rev... If you drop below 1000 the motor dies? No matter what you do? How is it running above 1000 -- rough? Smooth?

above 1k

Yep, above 1k it runs perfect (no slipping/bucking etc)

as soon as I hit 1k the motor just cuts right out.

My first guess is this is a late April Fool's joke - a burnout? in a 60?!

But I'll suspend my disbelief for now.

How about a fairly major vacuum leak - i.e. a hose popped off. Blocked PCV?

Jake, the horrible grinding noise is only below 1000 RPM?

'burnout'

Okay...perhaps I used the term 'burnout' too liberally...I got the tires to smoke whilst going around a corner...

I am completely clueless as to the origin of the problem - she's starting fine, idling normal (around 500RPM) until I gas her...than it is almost like flipping a switch...

Even coasting to take stops/exits etc. she starts dying as soon as the tach goes south of the 1K mark.

Also, occasionally she won't shut off completely when I switch the ignition off....will stutter for about 5-10secs, than go out. My thoughts are Fuel Cut Solenoid?

Thanks,
jake

it sounds like vacume leak, between the carb and manifold. check for the leak with a piece of tubing "close" but not up to your ear and this will help pinpoint any vacume leaks.if no vacume leaks are present then check air fuel mixture- to much fuel will cause the dieseling effect that you described when you shut her down. hope this helps

I've done a burnout in my 60 before.
all my mates were doing ones in their Commodores and Skyline.
They asked me to do one joking around so i did it. and it worked.
Surprised everyone.
Only one wheel spun.
Clutch started slipping 2 days later.

The noise you now here, is it at higer rpm or lower when the engine is trying to die? While you may have gotten an award of pleasure from the burnout, and the idle problem is likley related to a vacume problem, the noise bothers me. You described it as a knock thump or a grinding noise and we can be more helpful if the rpm is included at the onset on the noise and the elimination of the noise. :hhmm::hhmm::confused:

Bypassed EGR today...no improvement. The engine just simply WILL NOT RUN at anything lower than 1,000RPM....Fuel Pump?

fuel cutoff solenoid?

You just said above it idles fine. So does it idle smooth and sound normal?

It seem like I say this all the time in other threads but check your engine fuse. That could cause the FCS from working right. You sure it is not a pump making noise like the smog pump or power steering? Check your timing for the running after turned off problem.

You sure you tightened the dizzy good? It might of came loose on the high speed turn burn out. :)

First thing to do at this point is check your timing and make sure dizzy is tight. It could of came loose and if it is not seating down all the way bad things can happen like not turning the oil pump properly. Made me think of this when you were asking about oil pressure.
