While I agree that it's probobly NOT the clutch, the slipping in my 60 happens at all speeds, standing still, climbing hills. etc. Just put your foot on the gas too much and all of a sudden you're doing about 500 rpms more than you were before. I still get enough friction to keep the truck moving, but it makes hill climbs very slow.

I'm leaning towards this also, BTW check the fluid levels anyways, could have a leak or the seal between them can also go bad.

Just got done talking with a buddy here at work who rebuilds Z cars and i explained the problem. At first he thought it was my clutch but when i told him it goes away when i press in my clutch to swtich gears he immediatly said it was the t/o bearing.

So jwest...great call on that one. When i get home i am going to remove the cover and take a look. When you say lube what do you lube with?
 
I've used a good white lithium grease from a spray can.

Once you're in there, you can back the t/o bearing off the pressure plate using the clutch fork.

Use a long straw and try to lube between the t/o bearing, hub, and shaft.
Go light and clean off any excess so as not to get any grease whatsoever into the clutch or pressure plate.

When I've had to, I've also used a little bearing grease.

t/o bearing

My t/o bearing is noisy, and every so often I get a squeek from my t/o yoke. Not too bad in the winter when the window is up, but now that summer is here and I drive w/the window down, the squeek is irritating. I drop the clutch inspection cover, spray some white lithium grease on the t/o bearing, and on the fork, and no sqeeks for weeks. yuk, yuk.

Did you have any issues of getting the grease on the flywheel?
 
None yet. I use a tube on the spray can to direct it, and am pretty careful. Also, I'm pointing away from the flywheel when I do this. More specifically, I'm on my back, feet towards the back of the truck. I think this orientation helps to prevent any grease from getting on the flywheel.
 
my 89 fj62 makes that same reving noise without increase in RPM. it starts when it warms up and at HWY speeds. it also runs a littlr hot at highway speeds and wheen been off roading for a while. replaced thermostat (thanks for all your help!!), but still on the warm side. next step is new radiator cap and then radiator disasembly by pro. that sound drives me nuts too.
 
hightide - your noise sounds to me like the fun clutch winding up the fan.

Bigsur - I don't know about your noise.... If you're cruising along on the highway hearing the noise, and you just tap the clutch pedal a bit, you can change the noise ? - then I'll go with the throwout bearing too. If its not, I'd hunt around the manifold some more, they can whistle.

Where is the sound coming from? If it's the tranny, it prolly a clogged tranny filter starving the clutches.
 
Going back to belt squeal again,

Not necessarily.
Belt screeching can come and go and change in pitch according to engine speed. You may not hear it at idle but only during or after a certain rpm range.

You don't sound completely sure this isn't the case. The sound is so distinct I would think you would've positively ruled it out.

If we're talking throwout bearing,
there may be too much noise interference to hear it at highway speed.
But you will hear it at idle.

Holding in the clutch about an inch or so would back the bearing off the pressure plate fingers and allow the T/O bearing to spin down.
The noise would stop immediately.

For fj60, years x/84 (I believe) and up, the T/O bearing spins constantly.
x/84 and prior use a hold back spring.

The Exact same thing happened to my 60 and I this can be bad or worse

Bad: Transmission leak
If it hasn't been going on tooo long then your tranny not fried.

WOrse: Transmission leak and driven alot with no fluid
Happened to me
Driving back from a road trip to Missouri I lost all my fluid and didn;t notice it until it was way too late.

Check your fluid and start there

You didn't by chance have the transfer case fluid changed at a Jiffy Lube type place did you? A very common mistake that these shops make is to fill the transfer with ATF instead of gear oil, because many newer transfers in fact do use ATF. This will result in a howling noise. They also tend to overfill, which will do stuff like clog your breather, and then blow your seals. I just encountered this in TOZOVR's truck at the 3FE Bash this weekend - his transfer was howling so we checked the fluid - it was way, way overfilled with ATF (not his fault - the PO had most likely used a Jiffy Lube type store). He drained it and filled it up properly with gear oil and the sound went away.

I agree, check all your fluids.

All the fluids were changed about 700 miles ago and this started up last week. I don't have any leaks anywhere except a small oil leak that's always been there. I have come to the conclusion that its the T/O bearings. I am about to get a new (rebuilt) tranny and transfer case installed and when i do that i am going to put on a completely new clutch kit and replace the rear mail seal.

the sound come from under the hood, im thinking it is the fan clutch. thanks for all input.
 
its the throwout bareing trust you mecanic ya know right
 
soory your having to spend so much money, but I'm in the same boat and the tranny and clutch kit will be in on friday. Hope everything goes well.
