Help with engine noise/knock

I think, pulling the engine would be a waste of time, unless they think something else is wrong. They still have to pull the pan and head, which can be done while the engine is still in the vehicle.

For sure no reason to pull the engine. It's a quick job to pull the head and pan off. There is no way to remove the piston from the bottom unless you drop the crank out, then you still have an issue of trying to compress the rings when you go to put the piston back in, so it needs to go out/in from the top.

I would try to work a deal with the shop to have them do it for a greatly reduced cost.

Jonny,

Sorry to hijack your thread but since I have the same noise I thought I would chime in again and maybe get some advice from those with more knowledge thatn me. I have not had a chance to drop the oil pan again but I plan to do so. If my problem is a wrist pin, how will I know? What goes bad on a wrist pin? Can it be as simple as one of the pin bolts on the rod loose allowing the pin to have movement other that rotational. Can these pin bolts be re-torqued from the bottom by removing only the oil pan. Unfortunately I have no warranty or shop that has done any previous work. It all me. Rig has sounded this way (like a diesel) for over 8 years. I would like to quieten it down if possible. Any help would be appreciated from any one.

From what I understand they were doing the fix by removing the oil pan. I am hoping to get it back in the next day or 2, and while I am there, I will ask some questions for you. Sorry I can't be of much help...
