Hi y'all, new to 70's not new to Mud/40's. Actually I had an RJ70 about 10 years ago, so let's say I'm renewing my relationship with J7's. Like a long-lost brother. Or an estranged father. Either way it's a union long overdue!

I'm about two days away from pulling the trigger on a BJ74 LX import. I've done my research on the process and the importer and am pleased with what I find. I'm talking to the dealer in Oz, who is talking to his guy on the ground in JP and who knows from there. So to make sure I order the right truck I need to know what spec levels BJ74's came with. Can I get some Mud support?

Could you fully customise your truck from the factory? Or did you have to stick to the options offered at that level; and if so, what options were offered at each level?

My poor/inaccurate example:
BJ73 - 3B, manual windows,
BJ74 - 13B-T, electric windows, PTO
BJ74 LX - 13B-T, electric windows, PTO, cruise control

I dont know of any cruise control models

I have a BJ 74V

My 74 came with 'cruise control '--- it called the manual throttle :grinpimp:, I use it for short periods to prevent my feet from going to sleep on long flat drives when no one is around.

I dont know of any cruise control models

I have a BJ 74V

Just a V, or is it a VX? Or do you mean V as in Toyota code for Van?

Chime in everyone with your info. Even if you think it won't help. If you write your truck grade and it's specs I might be able to extrapolate enough.

Thanks in advance.

Daniel :)

My '89 BJ74 LX came with no lockers, semi floating rear, no winch. Power windows/mirrors, suspension seats. A/C.
Other local LXs have the cable locker/FF rear combo, and PTO or electric winches, no suspension seats.

The VXs I've seen have all been HZJs.

Thanks Hulsty and bj70_guy - heaps. Anyone else got anymore info?

Hopefully I'll snag a nice little 24v 74 with 13B-T POWER!

My '89 BJ74 LX came with full floater rear axle, PTO, power side windows and mirrors, AC, no suspension seats, no factory lockers. .
Never heard of factory cruise control on these rigs.

You could also get an electric sunroof,a thermometer with inside and outside temps, inclinometer which gives the angle of the vehicle ,front and rear lockers, rear heater, suspension seats and probably a few other items.
I think they also had electric mirrors.
IMO ,you dont really need them ,all those little switches and gadgets are a PITA when they get old.

I have seen a ZX level which is the ultimate, but I think that was only available in the later HZJ74.

Can this guy genuinely bring one in for you?I thought the the JDM landcruiser importing came to a halt 3-4 years ago.
Make sure he knows what he is talking about before you hand over any money.

Hey all, thanks for the input. Now I have a bit more of a clearer view. I'm under the impression you could pretty much tick and flick when it comes to options, market pending of course.

Rosco I'm not 100% but I am about 90% confident it can be brought in. I've put down a $1000 deposit on a $14k truck and I pay the balance only once the truck is in my possession. It's all contracted, so I feel safe. I've spoken to the dealers on several occasions and my judge of character tells me they're good blokes [for car dealers]. If it goes sideways from their end I get my $1k back, if the car's not as described/photo'd I get my $1k back, if I renege cause I change my mind I don't get my $1k back. If they are crooks well then the loss of a thousand will hurt but hey, it's their life and they make their own karma. I did an ABN search on them and their business has been registered since 2002 with no registered charges [a fancy term saying they've never had to give collateral in exchange for cash to keep the business open - a sign of poor management].

It's a risk I was willing to take as BJ74's are pretty much the bees knees and as you know there's fxxx-all here. If it all comes off it'll be a good deal, it's only got 92 000km!

Thanks for your input guys. If it all works out I'll post pics/specs. Give it 6 weeks.

Cheers

Daniel

Did they tell you it will be a 24 volt version? Its not so bad though, most auto electricians in oz know how to work with 24volt and companies like Repco sell the 24v starters and alternators.
Good luck with it,make sure you come back with some pics;)

Damn 14K !! Your definately keen for a BJ74!! couldnt find one locally ? What are local prices like for them anyway I might have to sell up and get an 80!

With 92000klms and probably(hopefully) rust free it sounds ok to me.
Most of the middies in oz have been loved to death or neglected to death, there isnt much out there these days worth looking at.
I still have pangs of regret for selling mine.

What kind of a turbo 80 would you get for $14K:D

Yeah it seems like a bit much but to find a RWC truck with low miles is virtually impossible. For example a 380 000km one went for $9500, with minimal mods. They're just not out there. Or a non-RWC one that's had a hard life for $9500. I even priced FJ73's and 13B-T swaps/BJ73's and aftermarket turboing.

The one thing I always maintain is that the lower mileage the better. It's a deciding factor for me, especially when the truck in question [allegedly] has sub-100 000km.

Would love a 1HD-T 80 series but once again to find one with under 300 000km is virtually impossible. And I like the arrow track of the 70's. It's just me and the missus anyway.

Yeah one with 400 000++km. Ask me how I know. If this thing works out and you're keen Rosco, PM me and I'll be happy to share the details of the dealer.

I've also discovered 24v systems are more of a mental barrier for people. Parts may be scarcer, but all major electrical components can be rewound by your off the wall auto-sparky, it's part of their training. 24v stuff lasts longer anyway, hence the use of it in military and trucks. Plus Japan's only round the corner. :)

My best mate is a wicked-smart auto-sparky and said 24v no probs.

Thanks again y'all, really and truly. Looking forward to [fingers crossed] taking delivery in Sydney and driving back to sunny Brizzo!

Damn they are still going for good money then!, when the time comes I hope I can get half that at least for mine.

Well mate if it's an honest truck than the major deciding factor would be the market. Under supply + over demand = seller power [higher prices]. I hope for your sake mate!

In the mean time Hulsty, live. Live for me.. [for 6 weeks anyway]

All things being well I'll take delivery in 6 or so weeks and drive it back to Brisbane. I'm not a huge income earner at this stage mate so the mods will be budget dependant. However.. I was thinking of a few to get started [in order]:

Change all fluids
Ditch the hideous OEM PTO set-up [keeping the winch itself]
Wind the boost up a notch?
2.5" - 3" exhaust
Nice, soft, supple spring lift

Other than that I haven't really thought that far ahead. Figured I'd actually receive the truck before getting too excited.

Any tips mate? What mods have you done to yours?

PS. It's a manual. I drove an auto 74 and it was terrible. Might've been that particular box though.
