Help w/ possible buy - 1991 4x4 22re 5Spd

Hey everyone,
I know there is info out there on things to look for when buying a 1991 4x4 22re 5spd but I do not have much time. My sister just saw one on the way home and the owner is looking to sell ASAP! The truck looks good overall. I have not had a chance to test drive it. I am hoping to test drive it tonite. But before I go I wanted to know what specific things to look for in this generation truck.

Any other things besides checking for oil leaks, wheel play in the front, rust, repaint, accident, listening for certain noises, etc. Any help would be much much appreciated.

Oh, I believe the guy is asking for $5100 and it currently has 151,000 miles on it. Would you say this is a fair or good deal?

Not many problem areas on those trucks. But 5100 is pretty high for my taste. It would have to be the cleanest 91 I've ever seen for that kind of $$$$ and miles. Only paid 2700 for my old 90 4Runner with a little rust and 195k.

I am in California so I am not sure if that makes a big difference. I am hoping to be able to talk the guy into at least $4800 or so. If the truck was overall clean and running strong still would you say $4800 would be fair price?

Yeah, thats a bit high, but if he wants to sell asap you could probly offer him less.

Some of those had minor electrical issues with the rear window and power windows. Mostly switches going bad. check the CV boots for rips and I think there is a little inspection plate for the clutch, see how much plate you have left.....

If it was nice and clean, lots of records of work done (oil changes....) drove like a dream I could see maybe up to 4500, but think about this, you can get one with a blown engine... for around 1500 if the truck is in nice shape, drop 2k and have an engine put in it, and for 3500ish you have a rebuilt truck... But I have more time than money, so that's the route I'd go. It would have to be a very sweet truck and I would have to be in a tight spot (Like only having 5k to get a truck is a tight spot...) to go for it. Also, I edited my first post a little.

This one does not have power windows. Are they suppose to be power windows?

Also, how would I go about checking the plate that you are referencing?

Kelly Blue Book listed excellent at $4200. So yes it is high. I am going to talk to the guy and see what he has to say.

listen for transmision bearing wine in 5th gear or in nutral with the clutch out

Thanks guys for your help. The truck ended up being really good on the exterior and interior. The motor was ok but there were two things that didn't work for me. The first was when I went to test the hubs and shifted the gears to 4L it engaged but took a long time to disengage. It was not shifting into 2h and when it finally did it took a while for the indicator to turn off. The second thing was the mileage seemed like it had been messed with before. Im not sure if the owner disconnected the cable or what but the numbers seemed off for the records.

So looks like I will continue my search for a 3rd gen.

it is very easy to disconnect the spped sender on that truck, and keep the miles low. the interior and paint can be covered in gold for all i care, but he could have jumped the snot out of it, and never changed the oil.

for that price i would expect to see at least 12 years of maintenece history.

i personally would not spend that much unless it was mint, lifted, locked, 33" tires or better, stereo, SR5.

i paid 2K for my 89, 300 for my 80 and 1700 for my 86.

all great trucks. never spent too much on them for maintenece.

but remember. these toyotas are very hard to kill.
just ask all the ownwers of dead heeps, that were rescued by toys...

I paid $3800 for my '91 4x4 22re in 2001; it had 142K miles. The engine lasted until 164K miles. The PO's NEVER changed the gear oil IMO and it needed rear pinion bearings within 2 years. Still woking fine now @ 196Kmiles.

I purchased my 92, 140k miles last year for 4k. It is the best body/interior I have ever seen in this area. Well, 3k later the tranny 5th gear goes out and so does the rear r & p. 5k after that, the 02 sensor fails, the muffler (which was supposed to be new) blows the end off. Now, I am up to 5k, with a tranny/transfer from a wrecked 93 with 75k miles in a 92 that is a solid 9/10 in terms of body.

I think 3500-4000 is a very fair price for a good working, fairly nice 4x4 Toyota in the year ranges of 91-94.

Oh, and my truck was a one owner-another reason I bought it.
