Can anyone help diagnose or point me in the right direction for a weird noise the mechanic hasn’t heard before? Usually happens immediately after moving forward after the car starts up.

You need to get a longer recording along with tell us what we need to listen to. I hear a click and a dude yelling. Is it heard inside or do you have to have the windows down? Does it increase with speed or engine rpm?

@ski4run :

What year/model?
Any damage, service, or repairs before the noise started?
Does the noise appear or change in forward and reverse, brake pedal pushed, not pushed?
Does it feel like something is holding the vehicle back, or like the transmission is slipping?
Does the noise volume or frequency change with road speed?

Try to get a recording closer to where it seems the noise is loudest ie: engine bay, transmission, front/rear axle/wheels

Not much to go on...

It is like a whirring sound.

The sound appears to lower in volume as you move your phone to the left at the end of the video = sound from right side of vehicle maybe...

Since you mentioned moving...
  1. Front Pinion Flange Dust Shield scraping the diff, or it could be the dust shield at the t-case
  2. Front disc brake dust shield hitting the rotor
  3. Rock between rotor and dust shield

Sorry all. But it only happens once so getting the video is really difficult.

The specific noise happens at the 1-2 second mark, it happens only once, or did until recently. Start the truck, release the brake, roll forward 1-2 seconds, noise happens, never again until I turn the truck off and give it some time.

On two of the most recent drives, it does it the one time after starting off, and then again after I hit a dip in the road and the front end moves up or down.

Thanks for the time and thought.

So what does the noise sound like? I can't filter out all the other noise to guess which one you are interested in and since it is so short of a recording we can't tell what is normal for your vehicle/road/tires etc. This is like playing a single second of a song and asking which song it is from.

The noise is that strange mechanical whirring or groaning, in this case the car is rolling less than a mile per hour when it happens, so there is no road or tire noise. The reason I'm asking the forum is because is not like any other noise I’ve ever heard a car make. It’s almost like a pump pressurizing. I’m confident it’s not the power steering or brakes, it could be the A/C but having it on or off doesn’t seem to effect the noise happening once every time I start rolling after I start the car.

When is the last time you checked gear oil in front and rear diffs as well as transfer case? Also have you greases your drive shafts recently?

How do your brake pads look all the way around. Does you ebrake still work and if so do you set it regularly?

Have you gone around and felt the temp of each wheel after driving for a bit?

I grease the drive shafts every oil change, gear oil is in good shape. I change it every 20-30k

When you first roll away and the noise appears, ABS doing self check, ABS pump might be getting louder as it gets older or on its way out.
Ok! this seems like a likely culprit, we had a ton of snow here this winter (relative to normal St Louis winters) and some sub zero temps for a few weeks, the ABS light came on once when the wheels were slipping on ice, and I chalked it up to being a wheel speed issue because on the next start the light was off and hasn’t come on since. But it may be the pump getting old. Thanks!

Power steering pump groans on occasion, and the system has been gone through thoroughly. The noise happens independent from any braking action whatsoever.
Have you cleaned the reservoir? The screen gets clogged up, you can't see the screen until you drain the oil out of it.

@ski4run "I grease the drive shafts every oil change"

Do you grease the U-joints and slip yolks?

How often do you add Moly fortified grease to the steering knuckles?

Do the front axle swivel balls look dry, rusty?

Dry spindle bushings can cause a noise, usually a low rumble IME. It begins with the first drive of the day for a mile or less, then it gets worse the longer the vehicle is driven with dry knuckles/bushings. The spindle bushings (and CV joints) get their lubrication from the grease inside the knuckle cavities so important to keep them ~2/3-3/4 full.

Dry wheel bearings IME can make a sorta whirring noise if loose/dry

Just some random thoughts.
