Well as the title states I've got a problem with a rear main.

I pulled the rear main seal on the '97 fj80 i'm working on and found the crankshaft to be grooved.

I've contacted my machine shop, but he has not been able to find a speedi-sleeve for the crank.

Has anyone else ran into this? And if so what did you do to address it?

Thanks
Greg

On other engines, I've seen crank seals installed 2mm further in or out, so that the seal does not ride on the groove. Kind of a crapshoot, but if you have no choice, this one can work.

How hard was it to get to the rear main. did you have to hoist the engine when you split the tranny and engine. Some steps on how you did would be great.

Can't the groove be taken out using a crocus cloth? I also like the idea of placing the seal either more inboard or outboard so that it can ride on a new path; I did this on my '97.

It was not too bad, I pulled the trans. out. Having a lift, trans jack and pole jacks simplify the process.

The groove is too deep for a cocus cloth. The idea of driving it in short or deep makes sense, but this is not my vehicle and I not very comfortable in telling the owner this may or may not work.
Which way did you drive the seal & how long or how many miles has it been on yours. I assume yours is not leaking.

You make a good point. I didn't have a leak to begin with but so far, knock on wood, no leaks. The work was done at least 15k miles ago.

My shaft wasn't grooved, maybe marked and that was easily taken care of with the crocus cloth. I think I put the seal in short just to be on the safe side.
