Help me identify a heater hose please! (1 Viewer)

Hello Mud,

I've been lurking for awhile, you guys are such a great resource for a newbie amateur-hour mechanic!

This question pertains to a 1995 FZJ80 with a heater hose leak.

I think I've got this assembly kit identified (87209), except for an elbow hose that is connected from the bottom of the "T" connector to a vertical hard line on the firewall. I don't see that connection on this diagram (red dot), which has no hose on the bottom of the "T".

See below for my truck, and below that the corresponding diagram.

I'm hoping someone can point me to a hose kit to buy, or tell me I just need to get a generic heater hose 90 degree joint and cut it down to size. Also, why isnt it on the diagram?

The rubber hose and steel pipe that carries coolant to the rear heater are generally in pretty sorry shape after 20 odd years and a leak in any of it will dump all of your coolant. Its tough to replace those parts because they're tucked up above the exhaust. A lot people will bypass the rear heat (basically remove that T fitting) because few of us use the rear heat anyways.

You can use Gates 28460 for the hose with your red question mark on it. You just have to trim it to fit.

Do you live in a state that has very very cold winters and do you usualy have passengers in the middle or third row? If the answer to both is yes, then go ahead and replace everything in OEM configuration.

If the answer to either of those qiestions is No, then I would recommend bypassing the rear heater altogether and yanking the heater out from under the passenger front seat.
There are a bunch of threads on how to do this, pretty straight forward and removes a common failure point that is a PIA to fix on the side of the road when it blows. Those hard coolant lines run down the body right on top of the transmission and are a nightmare to remove unless you remove the trans.
