Wanted Help me Guys! I want a LC 1998-2002

I am looking for a 1998-2002 Land Cruiser. I have a budget of $8,000. I am firm on my budget since I taking the steps to get debt free and pay cash only for things like cars. I need something reliable to drive my kids to school and something that can take me hunting on the weekends.

I have never owned a LC but I am 100% sure from all my research that is what I want. I am posting here because (from what I have read) you guys do an excellent job of self policing what is a fair deal and what is a bad deal.

Can you help me or am I unrealistic in my budget?

By the way, I have sold my other car and I have the cash in hand.

Thanks,
George

98-02 at $8k won't be easy to find but it's not impossible. You'll more than likely end up with a 98 with a lot miles. Lots of miles is okay if there's good to decent service records available.... timing belt and water pump replacement comes to mind.

my 2 cents

Thank you Griffin. I agree (from what I have seen). That is why I am here to help with the vetting process of a high mileage vehicle. I may end up having to buy a FJ-80.

I guess I have two things going for me: Cash in hand today and "some" patience :)

Thanks Griff...got a bead on a few closer to home. They are listed higher but I am getting close.

Well... I guess everything happens for a reason...
George, I live in north Dallas and drive to Tulsa every single week for work. I was a member of Bayou State LCA before moving here a year ago. I have had several FJ40's, an FJ80 and am currently driving a FJ Cruiser. Returning from Tulsa two weeks ago I noticed a VERY clean '99 FJ100 on the side of 69 in Savanna, OK, in a Propane Company's lot. If you take the Indian Nation Turnpike south to McCallester and then 69 south towards Dallas, it is about an hour south and the LC is on the right. It was a grocery getter and is clean inside and out...the seller started at $9,500 and I just spoke to her today and she said her absolute bottom line is $8,200. It is maroon and the paint looks good, the leather is also in surprisingly good shape which leads me to believe the driver bottom was re-done. It had about 172,000 miles and the timing belt HAS been done recently. Another bonus...it does have the factory rear-locking diff. It also has the third row seats still. As much as I want it, I just don't think that I'll get the green light from the wife! So...I definitely think it may be worth a little road trip this weekend! If you pm me, I'll give you the phone number that I have for it...or maybe the wife will change her mind by some miracle this weekend and she'll let me buy it. I wonder if vodka will help...

Thanks,
Eric

wow, that sounds great. Timing belt replacement date and mileage should come with a sticker, usually on something around the radiator or engine hood/cover (mine is on the cover).

Hope it works out for yah, 100s have a great balance between comfort and off road ability.

That's probably the cruiser I have been seeing on craigslist for Tulsa, just search land cruiser. I would attch a link but have no clue how.

Sounds like it's exactly what your looking for!

Good luck

Know exactly where you're talking about, and it must be recently parked there, because I didn't see a couple Friday's ago on way to Durant, and I'm looking (for 80, but....).

If you're in Tulsa area for any given weekend, there's several FJC guys in the area, and with the weather warming to the 80s, betting we'll see local activity. There's talk of a Disney run next Saturday, as a matter of fact.

Umm, unfortunately i think i'm selling mine, it's a 1997 40th anniversary edition #208, listed on ebay, i'm trying to sell my wife's 2004 sable, so i can keep the Cruiser.

Thank you Eric. I saw that one on two Saturday's ago. She lowered the price last Saturday and she told me the same deal $8200. I pulled the carfax and the last buyer did not verify the mileage. They chose "exempt" because it was unnecessary to verify over 100k. I actually believe the mileage from the carfax records but I was gun shy if and when I ever try to resell.

There was also a collision back in '05. I never made the drive to see it but it sounds really nice and a very fair deal if you can overcome those issues.

Anyone, who wants the carfax can pm me with their email address...no need to buy it again:)

By the way, I appreciate all your kindness on the board. My research of your content let me know all the things I needed to know to become an informed buyer.

That being said, I pulled the trigger on a 2000 with 134k. I am so stoked. Pictures to follow:)

Thank you all so much. I broke my budget but I got a heck of of a deal on this 2000 LC 100. My wife was not pleased about me breaking the budget but I could not pass rig up.

With all your help, I was able to verify the right things. It was a two owner car. The first was a Doctor and the second was his radiology guy. It came with all the records (3in thick) with 95% done at the dealership with exception of a few oil changes and tires.

-2000 LC 134K
-Timing belt and water pump 108k
-Starter, intake gasket, fan clutch, crossover seal, drive belt 133k
-All service and oil done at proper times
-Exterior excellent (need to repaint middle of molding strip...saw a ton of post on here about that), one scuff on corner of bumper, no scratches that cannot be buffed and no dents to pull).
-Interior excellent with the exceptions that it needs a very good leather cleaning (suggestions?), no rips or tears, and some carpet areas that need to be steamed.

I cannot be happier. I searched for months and could not find a nicer, cleaner, well documented LC in the country. This was was 15 miles from my home.

From what I have seen, I lesser quality and higher mileage have sold consistently on eBay for 12+. I would not cut her lose for 15k cash in hand.

I have owned more than a dozen cars in my life time and I have never been more excited about this one...including one of the only new cars I bought (Porsche Cayenne).

Thank you all again,
George

sweet looking rig, grats on the purchase

Good looking rig! Glad it worked out for you, your wife will understand in time.

I too have a 2000 100 series 120 k miles. Replaced timing belt, wp and recent tune up. After I have replaced stereo and put new tires on it I'm thinking of selling just to thin the herd some. It's a tough decision for sure. I would have offered to sell but gonna be picky when I do pull the trigger.

Good luck and enjoy!!

Changing the stereo and speakers is on my list. Can you send me a note when you do? I would like to take a look when you open it up since you are so close to me.
