I have been lurking around IH8MUD for the past year or two to satisfy my curiosity about the LC70 series. I am from Oregon, but I am currently living in Dubai, UAE. I was able to recently purchase a brand new LC FZJ76 Station Wagon that I hope to some day get into the US (I don’t have much hope, but I have some ideas).

Anyways, my problem is that I am having a tough time getting decent advice on what tire I can fit under a stock suspension LC76 and what wheel offset and size will work the best to get a wide tire under it without problem with interference. I am more interested in width at this point than I am height, this decision is driven by the abundant sand here and my hesitancy to drop too much money into a truck I might have to sell in the next year when my contract ends and I head off to some other far flung place. Tires I am ok with, but I don’t want to get into lift kits until I am more confident.

The local tire guys don’t know much about off-roading and know even less about the LC76. I would like to see something like a 285/75 16” under it, but what kind of problems can I expect with this tire and are there any wheel considerations? In the US this would be much easier to research locally but I am hampered by a lack of local service, local knowledge of the 76, and my own lack of knowledge on the 76. My only hope is that someone here can tell me what a wide tire will do. My searches here seem to produce a lot of info on what tires you guys are running, but most of yours are modified more than I am willing to at this time.

Thanks for the help!

Maybe you could try some aussie forums . We've had the V8 diesel 76 series for over a year now and the aftermarket product industry is well and truly geared up with products for the 76.

The 76 series is basically the same as the 98 on 70/78/79 series and most parts will interchange.
The wheels are the same as all heavy duty 7* series made after 98 with the 5 lug wheel
Snake Racing in Sydney sell wheel spacers in 2-3 sizes
TJM ,ARB,Dobinsons and OME have suspension kits for these. Most are usally about 2 1/2 - 3inches.
A lot of owners here use the spacers on the rear wheels only as the track is 100mm narrower than the front.

Im reasonably confident the 285/75/16 would fit ,probably even bigger. But its best to ask someone who has done it.

exploroz ,4wdaction and outerlimits forums are the best ones

That's what I'm running on my 7x series truck. The tires are on standard Landcruiser 16" steel wheels I got from Toyota for $80 each delivered.

I have a 2.008 FZJ71 and 285-75-r16 tires, they don't rub at all, so you should be fine because our suspension/clearances are almost identical (except for the front fenders), your 76 just has a longer wheelbase than mine. Also,I'm almost sure that Toyota uses basically 3 types of rims for the 70 series, I have seen 71s with all three types using 285-75-r16 tires, no problems.

My 71's suspension is 100% stock, but I will get an OME 3" lift soon :bounce:.

If you still have doubts, join these forums and ask there, they also have the 76 series available so they can answer your questions.

Enjoy that beast

LOL!!
you can run a 34 skinny with no lift... a 285/75/16 is a sweet tire for highway /street use... in the sand i think you will be wishing you went wider...

I have a 79 with stock standard suspension runnibg 275 70R16 BFG Mudterrain. They are wide enough, deflates well for sand and have strong sidewalls for sticks and stones etc. No interference at, except on reversing and turning the wheel rubs against the front mud flap. Souns terrible.

The rear bumper tends to bottom out in gullies, but is because of a silly desgin. I will change to an ARB shortly and not bother with lift

Hey,
you also have to pay attention to your rims, if you dont want to spend too much money in the moment ....

stock rims
as split rims are available in 5.5" and 6.0"
normal steal rims are

6.0"

6.5" in two designs

1463777.jpg

8.0"

for the 285 you will need 8.0" rims,
265/75 will work with 6.0" but 6.5" would be better...
(the hight of 265 will be aequivalent to the most common 7.5R16)

rims and tires

I am doing a 1hzt swap into our fj55 and am going to use the axles from a hzj 78. I'm going to run Michelin xzl 900's (36.5 x 10.3) and need 16" rims with 5 bolt pattern to run them. I was also thinking old school stock hubcaps would be nice, so they would need the tabs. Any ideas other than custom ?

Much weaker than stock 55 series ? I want the extra width and high pinon. What is the weak point the axles or the diff ?
Mike

well, I think the high pinion diff by construction..
and if you change to 4.88 toyota diffs (wich you need to move the 255/100) you´ll need a distance ring, making the Diff even weaker then the original. I don´t kow if there are stronger aftermarket parts in the US available? I broke our original Diff with smaler 255/85 in the mud...since I´ve been driving very carfully....

If you cannot do without the highpinion I would rather take 80 axels. But the original 40/50 Diffs I would prefer...for the width you could use:

But I´m not a mechanic / expert, I can just tell you about our experiences....

Forks in the trail...

I'm just down the road in Muscat and am 3 months behind you.....ie the delivery time..but not yet cracked the check book open,

I bought a 2.4RJ wagon as a stand in it took 2 months to find 1.....bought as is with all its issues

....same from the bulkhead back only worn to crap

did you go 4.2 diesel ( non turbo) or the standard 4.5 EFI ?

what km or milage are you getting ? as there is no milage on the local spec sheet as no one cares

Did they supply you standard rims ? here its split rims....or add some cost ?

Price.......mmm there's a sticky....whats the deal in AED ?

here in Oman prices quoted with 3 month del are 10,000 to 11,000 Omani rial

not bad when the FJ cruiser is 13,700rial....mind you off the shelf...and deliveries weekly

the front center unit is weak by design (yes, Toyota dropped the ball ...again.) but the elec locker up front is a lot stronger than the open...problem is, can you actually get a e/locker fro the front diff in that series?

Yes, if your talking about the current model 7* series

well locally here in Muscat info is limited

a 2 page brochure with the only listed option is Petrol or Diesel....he mentioned snorkel and aloys instead of the split steel standard rims.

It comes with LSD rear as standard and by the 4wd system diagram a central dif lock but it might just mean low range as there's no real info

The diesel is the 4.2 naturally asperated any good ? can a turbo be added later ? any one any idea on milage -ltrs per 100 km

the 4.5 efi is too thirsty for when I return to europe and die on my fuel bill every week
