Planning to post this in the classifieds, but not sure exactly what I have. Came out of my ‘69 FJ40 with a SBC. I ended up replacing the motor, trans, and transfer case and have this leftover. The trans is a 5-speed NV4500 and the t-case, I believe, is the original ‘69. I could be wrong and want to ensure I’m correct before positing the ad. Planning to sell it cheap since I don’t know its history well. Any help with ID would be appreciated.

The NV4500 looks to be the 1st gen (92-93)version, i think, which should have the lower 6.34:1 1st gear. They are id'd by the 1 piece top cover. The shifter tower on later versions is bolted to the top cover and has a 5.61 1st gear. The Tcase looks to be an early vacuum operated unit. Probably a 3 speed case.

Thanks. That makes sense. Any idea of a reasonable asking price?

I have no idea. You might want to include the bellhousing.

I see used NV4500s go for north of $1,000 here in Idaho. A guy in Bend, Oregon rebuilds them for around $2,000. They take a special fluid, GL4 type. If something else is run in them, the seals go. If it isn't leaky and the fluid looks clean, you might have a $1,500 unit there.

BTW, love that setup in my 1975 (with a splitcase transfercase)

Actually the fluid is very specific. It needs to be synthetic. You need to do your own research on what fluid you're comfortable with. The little research I've done, the nv4500 has something like carbon fiber syncronizers that can be destroyed by using the wrong fluid. I run a 75 40 with a PO installed SBC, 1st gen nv4500 and the stk 1 piece tcase. Its been great, but It's an early AA conversion that's really long. In the future Id like to upgrade to the shorter conversion for a split case, because it's a stronger case and has more aftermarket lower gearing options. I think the OP's conversion is the later shorter version for an early tcase.

You might find additional identification information here.

Found some additional information that may help:

"Bellhousing Bolt Pattern:

GM 1993-1995 10.078 across the top, 10.394 across the bottom, 4.685 vertically

GM 1996 + up 10.078 across the top, 9.738 across the bottom, 6.043 vertically

Dodge (All) 10.078 across the top, 9.738 across the bottom, 6.043 vertically"

Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it. Hopefully, it’ll find a new rig soon.

I just enlarged one of your pictures that shows the right side PTO plate. There is a metal tag between the two rear bolts. That's the manufacture's ID tag. If you can clean up the plate and get the number you could try running it and get an exact identification.

Byron, thanks so much. I’ll clean it up and try to ID it. Good to see you’re in Billings. Used to live a couple of hours away outside of Anaconda. Miss it out there. Thanks again for the help.
