help I need a new tranny!

Well, I took the chevota to rick and he said the tranny needs an overhaul. I am seriously considering doing a manual conversion for the longevity. Can anyone help??? This is my daily driver so I need to get started on this fast.

tony, im not sure but im guessing a manual conversion would be a big pain to do, especially considering its your daily.. you would need to put in a clutch, find a bellhousing, tranny, and t-case that would bolt up.. new clutch, ect to get it all to work.. Id either find a used 700r4 for now, or have one built.. I LOVE my Auto and would never go back to a standard for a wheeling rig.. I picked up my 700r4 for4 $1000 and its got all the upgraded stuff inside, but that was a good deal..

regardless any auto turning 35's is not going to last that much over 150k miles or so.. let us know if you need help replacing that sucker.. i bet we could do it in a day if everything is all lined up!

Thanks, I am definitely still looking into to it all. It still drives for now. It all really depends on the price. The work is not a problem. I am always up for new challenges. None the less whatever the case if anyone wants to help I would greatly appreciate it!
 
yea if you decide to drop in a manual, ill help you out.. ive got a 4 speed cruiser trans if it helps you out at all.. but if your going to put in a manual, you may as well go with somthing to match the rest of your rig.. Maybe an NV 4500? or a SM465? maybe even a stock trans with a doubler?

what diff gears are you running?

I still vote to stick with the auto :D
 
What spline is that 4 speed? what is the 1st gear ratio? I am running 4.11 in the diffs. I am looking at a sm465 because it might end up cheaper than repairing the auto. I like the 1st gear ratio too! crawl baby crawl! We'll see I still like the auto too. It is really going to come down to the price.

If you can get away with it I would stay with the auto.

Putting an a manual isn't too hard (I've done one with a 62, but not with the 350), but you need lots of little parts here and there. Plus you would need a new adapter to the Tcase, plus driveshaft work.

Do you have a list of parts I might need? I have already priced out the adapter. I think I have an idea of what I might need but I know I am probably overlooking stuff
 
Off the top of my head...

-Clutch Master Cylinder
-Hydraulic clutch lines
-There is a reinforcement that runs along the firewall that the clutch pedal mounts to. There is one in a 62 but it is missing the clutch mount. This is the same thing the gas pedal mounts to
Clutch Master Cylinder.
Flywheel (GM)
Driveshafts (custom)
Crossmember (custom)

That's all I can come up with off the top of my head. You may want to check in the 60 section, there have been a few threads about swapping in manuals in 62's.

On a side note, If you ever want to go wheeling for lunch, Mt. Herman road is right down the road in Monument ;) (that's where you are working right??)
 
Yea I work in monument. does anyone know anything about putting in a H55F tranny? I believe it is a toyota 5spd manual. Is there an adapter to mate it to a 350? Just looking at all the options?
 
It's official the auto tranny is a gonner. Bummer. oh well. I am picking up a sm465 and np205 with all the clutch assembly and bellhousing tomorrow for $450. It is a later model so it has the 32 spline shaft and the 6 bolt round style 205. I heard it is the strongest combo, which is good because when the 350 goes my dream is to put in a 383 Stroker!!! Anyone wanna help with the manual swap. I got some other ideas too. I posted up some stuff for sale. Not sure how much it is all worth so if I am crazy let me know!

sweet.. sounds like that should be pretty bullet prof, what are you going to do for a rear axle? let us know when your planning on it, and ill try and help as much as i can!

Keep the 60 front.. maybe switch to an arb or detroit, then you can sell the cable lockers as a package!
 
I was thinking about putting in a FJ80 front in with an e-locker and selling the axles complete as a pair. The housings kinda go with the lockers. They are a little different than stock axles....I think? Maybe the hybrid could work though. we'll see. I have been thinking about it before you mentioned it.

I saw that you did it. how do you like it? I wonder if it will work with the full float housing?
 
i guess you could get the Full float conversion they make for Mini trucks.. I seriously don't see the need for a full float, but if thats the way you want to go.

The thing i dont like about the 80 series front axle is the parts are not as common, they are pricey to buy/find parts for, Hy Steer options are much more limited/expensive, and they are not much of an upgrade in strength over a beefed up 60 Cruiser axle..

Just say "NO" to mini truck ring and pinion in a Cruiser! 80 birfs and axles are really tough but the reverse rotation 8" R&P is a huge downgrade to what you already have! You can hybrid a 6x housing and 80 ends using 80 birfs and 6x inners but then you still are only the width of the 6x and you still need to deal with hi steer issues. The ONLY advantage of a Cruiser full floater in the rear over semi floater is the lack of c-clips. Unless of course you plan on hauling some weight.

Edit: What happens when you combine mini truck stuff on a Cruiser?

So you think cutting up my current rear axle housing and centering the diff is the way to go? OUCH! I am scared. Is cutting up a full float cable locker housing worse than putting a mini truck ring and pinion in my cruiser? I wouldn't need the full float I was just curious if it would work with my current axle. If I go that route I will just keep the cable lockers.

just another thought??? What about putting a Ford nine inch in the rear???
