I have a 1987 22re the motor was just rebuilt about 7k ago. Almost everything under the hood is new and even the shop that built the motor is stumped! It starts, runs, and idles just fine even drives for a short time. Then it starts a constant puttering and drops power. New distributor, plugs, wires, ecu, relays, alternator, ignitor, and everything else i can think of. Fuel pump is fine getting spark, air, and fuel. What could it be?? I need my baby back asap.

Check the temp sensor

Look at your idle air control under the intake. It might be stuck cold and that is fine when the engine is closed, but bad when the engine is up to temp.

Also like said above, check the ECU temp sensor...not the sensor for the gauge. There is a test for that sensor in the FAQ section. It senses when the truck is when and puts it in and out of closed and open loop function in the ECU.

Check your ignition system. My coil took a crap and it did what yours is doing.

I am just going to assume you put in a new toyota fuel filter...

I would personally be looking at the TPS (Throttle position sensor) or Knock Sensor.
Does the lack of power come once it is up to temp?
Does the timing move around?

Here's a great how-to on the TPS:
Toyota 22RE Throttle Position Sensor

Now that i'm not at work I can give some background on the knock sensor.
I had an 88' truck that would run fantastic right when I started it, up until I hit the end of my road (2 miles) then it would fall on its face. It would barely idle and had zero power once it came up to temp. About that time the ecu light would come on, and would reset with each engine cycle (from running, to not, to running).

Hope that helps.

Nice. That makes for a relatively easy and inexpensive fix.

Did you get one from Mr. Toyota?

I think when I bought mine (4 years ago) Toyota wanted like $40-50?
It's amazing, sometimes, what is cheaper from the dealer.
