Toyota Landcruiser 1998

I have been looking for either an 80 or 100 and ran across this one. it is high mileage at 303k. Had new alternator, plugs, water pump timing belt done about a year ago.

Interior is decent I got some other pics. Some rust on the tailgate but nothing crazy.

I would appreciate any of your input

I have 300k on my 100. How mechanically inclined are you? How much time are you willing to put into maintaining a high mileage vehicle?

I would care more about the rust than I would the miles, if you search some of my posts I kinda detail how easy / inexpensive it is to replace an engine... I pulled apart a 305k 4.7 and you could still see the cross hatch hone marks and the bottom end showed no signs of wear or excessive clearances... but I hate rust

Wow. That is silly cheap. That said, Detroit is one of the worst possible places to purchase a 100 Series in terms of rust. I am in complete agreement with my fellow Tennessean about mileage not being the biggest issue. Especially at that price.

what mileage?

Did you end up buying it? How much was it? Old post I know but I'm curious...

Don't tease us, we've got to have history on this?
Well I'm a DJ so i travel a lot doing shows. I have traveled to a lot of amusement parks and texas state park camping grounds with my two boys. Mostly highway miles and crawling over curbs when necessary. As far as major changes. Ive always used Royal purple full synthetic oil. At 380950 while cruising at 80 on the Houston toll road my radiator hose went. Steam every where as i pulled of the toll to a service station. Had AAA tow it to my mechanic who said it ruined the engine. Which sucks because i was trying to see how many miles i could get and all it took was a busted hose, so check your radiator hose people as a maintenance item. At least that hose lasted over 300000 miles. Starter was replaced under warranty at 68000. Fuel pump at 350000. Changed the power steering rack at 398000. I had one cv axel changed at 400 thousand and i just had the other cv axle changed 414000, and i just blew out the front diff, and had that replaced just yesterday. (3-15-2016) Thanks to https://forum.ih8mud.com/members/arcteryx.4381/ for the differential. I am amazed that the drivetrain lasted over 400000 miles. Every one who rides in it cannot believe it is a 1999 with over 400000 miles on it. They comment on the smooth solid ride, and i agree. Going for another 400000, next trip north to Sandusky ohio, cedar point theme park.

Thanks, I love the history of parts and RP.

I need more...please...

Like was it under maintained, or did you stick with the maintenance schedule every 5K miles, performing all items.
Did you use only Toyota red 100% or/and distilled water only in cooling system.
Was transfer case and differential gear lube changed at regular intervals, and with what RP also??
Did you service wheel and axle bearing & bushings every 30K, and with what and what preload? ???
How about propeller shafts an spider joints (aka drive shaft and u-joints)??
Was power steering flushed how often and with what?
Was transmission flush and with what, or just drain al fill??
How about spark plugs & coils??
Do you pull trailer?
Use regular or high test fuel, and any additives?

It's rare to find over 400k, and even more so to have history.

I have used Royal Purple full synthetic fluids, so maintenance was never done at 5k miles. More like 7, and no i did not perform all items at one time either. This is a daily driver, not a mudder, its never gone hill climbing through the mud or stream beds. When i go camping in the state parks it hasn't gone into the back brush. I will go over curbs and through the grass when i have to, but other than that its usually on pavement. Regular oil changes, spark plugs, some coils usually number 6 or number 8. As far as transfer case and differential goes they are not changed often at all. Transmission has had drain and fill but no flush. I had the front wheel bearings done although they were not needed because the noise i was hearing was coming from the front differential. Bushings have not been done although it is time for bushings on lower control arm as the driver side is split. Drive shaft u joints have not been serviced, just had that shaft off while installing front differential. I will be using distilled water for radiator flush, but no flush solution as i was told its not good for the engine and will be filling with Toyota super long coolant which is a pink color. Power steering was flushed two years ago I also use royal purple power steering fluid . My mechanic recently said we should change the high pressure power steering hose out soon, just because of the mileage, but not urgent. I do not pull a trailer. I did rent a car trailer to pull my son's car from San Antonio texas to Houston so that my mechanic could do work on it as you can see in my avatar picture. I have pushed many people out of traffic when their cars have broken down on them. I use Shell super unleaded always, no additives, but i think the shell super unleaded has additives in it, so glad the prices are low right now. Power steering rack was re manufactured and the differential was from another land cruiser.

Thanks djermie.

FWIW, Mr. T's Wheel bearing schedule is to repack every 30K mile. The Axle bushing and bearing are in the back of the spindle (often overlooked), and the axle goes through them. These were the bushing I was asking about. The U-joints & propeller shafts slip yokes require lubing at 6 point, which is generally done at each oil change. Coolant flush (change) is every 20K miles or years, and I agree don't use chemical flush. This is normal driving, not severe.

These are just some of the items recommended in the Toyota Maintenance Schedule at regular intervals.

It seem there're four types of owners:
  1. Over maintainers; Does every scheduled item on time or sooner, cleans undercarriage, rust prevent and generally keeps showroom fresh.
  2. Maintainers; Follow schedule, but not to the T. Doesn't often clean the undercarriage (except drive through car wash) or do much of any rust prevention.
  3. Under maintainers; Doesn't follow Mr. T's schedule, or doesn't know of it. Change oil somewhat regular, and other fluid occasionally. Fix stuff only as it breaks, not preventive. Uses general mechanic most of time, rarely a Toyota specialist.
  4. Neglectors; Add oil when low, and fix stuff if must, using what ever low cost parts around.
I'm not trying to pick on you. I just find a high millage 100, that has history by one owner a rare opportunity to look into the just how tuff these beast are. I've seen a few on mud with about this or more miles on clock, one was reported with over 500K, but none with history.

We see question more and more often from buyers "should I buy with so many miles" I say don't worry about miles, be concerned with rust and accident. Your rig is living proof of this. Many say; only buy if rig has grade A maintenance records. I would agree for those that don't turn a wrench.

I'm restoring a under maintained 01 right now. So far I'm happy with they way it's going. Hope I can say the same when I'm done.

Which of the four types of owners do you consider yourself?

How did you blow the front diff?

See what happens when you open a can of worms. They crawl all over the place, getting under everything.

How did you blow the front diff?
I started hearing a whining sound coming from the front of my truck. My mechanic could not get to it until the weekend but i had a road trip to take, so i took it to another shop. They said it was the bearings they are shot both sides i said ok change them. Big fat lie, it wasn't the front outside bearings. Gave me this big fat lie about how they check the whole drive train and make sure everything is fine. None the less when i drove off from there still heard the whining. I drove 400 miles total the next two days sound progressively got worse. Got it to my mechanic that weekend and he said the differential is shot. It had no oil what so ever, so if i had oil in it it would not have failed. And if i had the time to let my mechanic check it it would not have failed. I changed it and it is going to last the life of my truck because i am not getting rid of this truck. It's paid for and it has been the best vehicle i have owned.
