My daughter is broken down in Westley, CA with a missing front brake caliper bolt. Can anyone tell me the size? 12x1.25 but what is the length. She is going to a parts store and needs the size and length.

She is on her way back to CalPoly with 2 friends and I'm 3 hours away.

Thanks for any help.

Jon-

I just measured one-the shank of the bolt appears to be 48mm long.

The problem will be that non-toyota 12mm bolts will have a 19mm head, which may or may not fit.

Also, Tundras have a similar caliper bolt that's 2mm short, but will work in a pinch. In fact, I've been running one for like 4 years!

Good luck.

well, you got a smart one there. Most folks would just not even know what to look for let alone get a replacement! Good job!

the caliper bolts are 1.25 thread pitch ( From FAQ)

Torque: 123 N·m (1,250 kgf·cm, 90 ft·lbf) (from FSM)

Can't find the size or length

Can't she take one out and take it in to the store?

thanks for the replies.

I pulled one out of my 87 4r it is 43mm long. 12mm x 1.25. So now they are trying to find one. They found a 60mm long one. They have a good samaritan helping them.

She described the symptoms and I guessed caliper bolt missing and the good samaritan confirmed it.
Drew is right, they bought a 19mm wrench for the aftermarket bolt. When she gets to SLO she'll take it in and get all bolts checked/replaced.
She was just here for a week and I just drove the car yesterday, couldn't happen here at home though! ARRRRRGGGHHH.

Gotta check those caliper bolts more often.

Thanks again for the quick replies. I've been on the phone with her.

Glad its working out.

Can you post the symptoms?

+ Jon - Which rig is this for future ref. the '97? I assume?

Glad its working out, just curious.

horrible grinding noise from front brakes. Popping noise in forward, no noise in reverse. Had to give a lot of throttle to move car forward. Caliper wedges up into wheel when moving forward, hence the popping noise.

Good Samaritan works for Rancho, has wheeled the Con, Moab, Johnson Valley, my daughter has been to Moab twice and practically grew up in Rubicon Springs so they have a lot to talk about. Helluva nice guy who was on his way to Long Beach and stopped to help three college girls crawling under their car. He's into this for about 2 hours now. Will be sending him a nice present.

They don't have a 17mm wrench to check the oem bolts unfortunately.

Also happened to my wife last week. I ended up using an old bolt from my tacomas front tow hooks ( I think, but almost certain ). ended up being a little longer and the socket size is 19mm. Now i carry a spare in the ash tray! thought this would never happen to me. :bang:

Similar thing happened to me. I would occasionally have a terrible wobble in the front end. I'd pull over and it would be gone. I discovered the one of the threaded holes in the knuckle was stripped and the bolt was basically just hanging on a couple threads on the end and gouging the hole bigger and bigger. Only a matter of time before it broke completely loose.

I guess checking the condition knuckles would be a good move.

Just get one from your local Toyota dealer. Much easier than running around trying to fine one.
