if i remember right, it's $3000 at that clinic.

If my 5 month old lab needed that, I'd have to do some serious soul searching. And then follow that up by searching for a new dog. :frown:

there is a vet in Charleston that is a master at the dysplasia surgery. Seeing how most of the labs in charleston are inbreed, he has a lot of practice.
Ya' prick.:flipoff2: Now it's even the dogs that are inbred.

don't deny it, you know is true.;p I would honestly say that half of the people I know with labs bred in Charleston have had the surgery on their dogs. Now for the inbred residents, just take a walk downtown when schools out, you'd think there was a rain man convention or something.

On a more serious note, I'd think about changing your paypal account name, dfcruiserguy. I for one would feel sort of uncomfortable sending money to a random stranger with "Icountpills@..." as the e-mail address. Just a suggestion. Are you a pharmacist? If so, let us know.
Sorry about your dog.

Yes, the chorus of "Dad let's me drive slow on the driveway every Saturday" from the Sunday crowd piling out of St. Michael's is a beautiful sound.:crybaby:

The email address is creepy.

Is your dog seriously 5 mos old? You do need to do some thinking.

Bernese are not exactly "issue free"...

I had a GSD that needed hip surgery at 5 years old. Dysplasia is a heart breaker. The thing that sucked was after a few more years, his elbows were tweaked from bone spurs. There were not a lot of clear options available - for which I am glad. It would have been nuts to spend more $ on him. Don't get me wrong, I loved that dog like no other... My point is, if this dog is looking like a genetic train wreck at 5 mos, the economic impact on you and your family may be significant...

the account is mom's, i can't remember my password, and yes she works in a pharmacy as a tech, she does all the pill counting filling prescriptions and such. Sorry for the typo's, we have Two bernese mt. dogs and falco the rottie, berner is a common nickname for 'em. Thx for all the vet reccomendations and such thus far guys, you rock.

uh PLEASE...

Hi, this is Jason's mom, please stop telling us to put the dog down. Would you put a child down just because there was something wrong witH him/her? Cooper is part of our family. If the specialists feel that they can correct this problem (and they do it ALL the time) then thats what will be done. BTW do a little research on CHD and you will find out that it is not always from inbreeding! You know Jason talks so great about you guys, when he told me he was posting this I never expected this type of response. Honestly, I am very dissapointed. Next time your precious Landcruiser breaks down JUNK IT!!! I mean its just a stupid truck thats gonna suck you dry. To all the kind souls who offered vet info..
THANKS : ) We will let you knowh] how it goes.

Uh ohh , I agree.

Also look at Univ of TN Vet Hospital in Knoxville.

I spent 2500+on my dogs knee. TPLO Sx. Hated to spend the cash but I agree some people feel there dogs are a family member. I have 3 and unless they were suffering from cancer or some terminal illness where they were in constant pain, I would make the effort to better there life as well.

I dropped some coin on my then 10 year old Rott when he had cancer. I couldn't do that for my five month old lab just yet. Don't have the attachment that I had with the old fella.

I agree! Totally suspect of the individuals who gave the "put dog down" advice!

I don't know what the vet schools are out there. Lots of people here send their pets with serious issues to Colorado State Universities Vet School. You still have to pay for services, but they are a little less and more up to date on the latest.

The difference is that when my truck breaks down, it doesn't suffer. I also don't go pleading to the dog forum I'm on looking for donations to help me buy whatever's cool from Bobby Long.

I offered to help last time when you dragged that rottie across town. Not this time.

Are you a redhead?

Please don't read too much into the thread. I'm pretty sure nobody intended to be hurtful. Rather, I think they were passing on the "adult to adult" hard information that seemed appropriate at first, but appears harsher once it is known that dfcruiserguy is only 17.

Even if everyone was aware of his age I don't think the responses were out of line considering folks were being asked, not for support, but for money. When a hat gets passed, and you don't support the cause, sometimes you feel the need to explain why... It's that honesty that makes this forum valuable much more often than not. Sharp sword.

I'm very sorry for Cooper and his family.

i don't really know how to say this, but your response was somewhat rude.

the members that were giving the response to put the dog down are people who have had dogs and have been through the same thing. My dog broke his hip 3 months ago. We could have done sugery, but sugery for a 12 year old dog is a big deal. Putting him down was the hardest thing i've had to do in my life. ever. but, it was better than watching him suffer.
personally, my opinion is to put him down as well. i know the attachment i had for my dog after 6 months was very meaningful, but as others have stated, this could be an indication of things to come. as I said before, the other members here are truly looking out for everybody's best interest....this is a very (for the most part) compassionate group of people.

also, in the future, please try to be more polite with your responses....especially while asking for money.

my Bernese mountain Dog, Henry, lived a life nearly eleven years long. He outlived all of his littermates by at least two years, and it was because I couldn't let him go. Even though he had an 'excellent' certification for his hips, he did develop elbow displasia which was corrected surgically. Two months after healing from that he was diagnosed with a sarcoma for which the vets gave him only a 10 -15% chance of surviving the surgery needed to completly remove the tumor. It was as big as a london broil cut. I went for those odds and he did recover. By then he was three years old. Over his remaining time there were other lesser issues that also required surgical correction. The poor guy lived most of his life recovering from surgury for my selfish benefit.

Would I do it again? Not the same way, but maybe. One thing is that I would never be so desperate to obtain a BMD that I would buy one from a breeder that did not gaurantee the pup against a six month old xray for dysplasia.
That puppy should be put down and the breeder should replace him. By supporting breeders who irresponsibly continue pumping out puppies that turn out to have serious genetically passed issues you are doing the entire breed a disservice.

Get a grip on the truth that they're only pets.
