OK....after searching and hunting down the missing and inop parts to smog the 1980 Fj40 I purchased a few months ago....I cant get the sucker to pass the evap. test.

She passed the visual test, passed the reg. smog test with flying colors...but I keep failing the evaperative test ( Thanks Arnold..:flipoff2:.Ca). Have replaced all hoses from canister to tank and returning to pump. Replaced both sender and fuel draw gaskets.........WTF ???? Is there a vent somewhere in the system? or ??

For you non-Cali's what they do is clamp/seal the hose leaving the canister going to the tank, then remove the gas cap and replace with a suction device 1/2 lb of suction....if you bleed off any you fail............:bang::flipoff2:

HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Move to Montana haha sorry not helping

I've been there....

O.k. so run through your options...:hhmm: if your bleeding off something is leaking.....lets start @ each connection and use a simple & cheap hand vacuum pump and also there are multple lines on the tank to the e-vap system. Are they all correct? Stay calm and think, Simple process of elimination..... What about the vent hose on the neck the tank has to pressure off somewhere............need more info...

check alot of things:

fuel tank for a rusty pinhole in the top, sender gasket, rubber hoses to vapor separator for cracks, metal hardlines for chafing or holes(common on pre 79 cruisers, dunno about later ones), charcoal canister for leaks, and the solenoid on the charcoal canister for functionality? any issues will cause it to fail.

also make sure they are clamping the correct hose, there are a few from the tank to the vapor separator. clamping one wont close the system.

how about putting about 1 psi pressure on the tank and search for the leak? duplicat the test but use low pressure
